Dr. Sachar, Megdell Bring Reports on Israel
to Flint Community Council Dinner Meeting
The cost of occupation runs
high, Israel is learning, but she
will not give up her "burden" un-
til she wins a peace treaty with
the Arabs, Dr. Howard M. Sachar
told more than 300 persons attend-
ing the annual dinner meeting of
the Flint Jewish Community Coun-
cil at Temple Beth EL
Dr. Sachar, American historian
and author, has spent many years
studying the young country and
was there during part of the Six-
Day War.
He called that war a military
victory but "an economic setback
for the country." He said that the
cost of the war must be measured
not in weapons alone but in the
cost of maintaining the territory
she won — its millions of refugees
and huge areas of unproductive
land. "All sources of income are
gone," he said, "and this places
immense social burdens on both
the Israelis and the Arabs."
Dr. Sachar, professor of mod-
ern European and Near Eastern
history at George Washington
University, is also visiting pro-
fessor on Near Eastern affairs
at the National War College in
Washington, D.C.
Some 40 or 50 major collective
settlements are in the planning
stages for the Syrian Golan
Heights, said Dr. Sachar, who
added that the Israelis will not
return the Jordan valley area, on
the other hand, a demobilized
Sinai Peninsula would probably
be returned.
Dr. Sachar predicted that Israel
is "on the threshold of a new
epoch In the Middle East."
The Israelis were left "almost
in a state of shock" by the "ava-
lanche of generosity" from Amer-
ican Jews, said Dr. Sachar. While
he was there, this genuine res-
ponse "made front-page news every
day in every newspaper during
the war."
The council's president, Joseph
Megdell, also directed his com-
ments toward the situation in Is-
rael, where he participated in a
United Jewish Appeal study mis-
sion.
The emergency situation in Is-
rael, he said, goes beyond all
local needs of the Jewish commun-
ity.
Although the mission met
with Israel's leadership, the
"average man in the street lived
through these tension-filled
times" also had much; to say.
"In Israel, every man, woman
and child is involved, and with
the exception of the very old,
the very young and the sick,
each one has a task to perform."
He told the audience that 'we
promised the Israeli leaders and
national UJA leaders that they can
count on the men and women of
the Jewish community in Flint.
We will not let them down."
He announced that Gilbert Y.
Rubenstein and Michael A. Pela-
vin will be co-chairmen of the
1968 UJA drive and said that at
least 25 per cent more than ever
before must be raised.
Jewish Community Council Ex-
ecutive Director Irving L. Geisser,
in his annual report, also reflected
on the response to the Middle
East War: "I am convinced that
we are not, nor perhaps can ever
be again, the same American Jew-
ish community we were only a
few short months ago. History
beckoned, and we rose greatly in
stature, in devotion, and in the
power of self-sacrifice."
The Flint community raised
more than $433,000 in emergency
funds in a few days, beyond a
