Attack on Apartheid by Israel Envoy
Brings Anguish to S. African Jewry

(Direct JTA Teletype Wire
to The Jewish News)

JOHANNESBURG — South Afri-
can Jewry is deeply distressed by
what it considers to be a serious
rift developing between the South
African government and Israel
over an attack on apartheid voiced
by the Israeli deleg a t e in the
United Nations Special Political
Committee recently.
This was indicated in statements
by South African Jewish leaders
here who cited the record of sym-
pathy and friendship extended by
South Africa to Israel, particularly
during the crisis that preceded last
June's Six-Day War and its after-
math. They also expressed growing
Concern over the angry reaction of
South Africans to Israel's anti-
apartheid stand as reflected in re-
cent comments in the press and
and on radio here.
The immediate cause for concern
Was the speech by Israeli delegate
Dr. Joel Barromi in the political
committee, widely reported here,
which denounced apartheid, the of-
ficial policy of separation of races,
and called on UN members to act

against it.
Maurice Porter, chairman of
the South African Jewish Board
of Deputies, felt compelled to
Issue a statement pointing out
that while "the Jewish commu-
nity has no collective viewpoint—
as distinct from each individual's
personal opinions — on South
Africa's race policies, the Jewish
community is far from happy
that this incident tok place."
Porter said it was appreciated

that

Dr. Barromi "did not take the

initiative in the matter, but was
replying to a bitter attack upon
Israel by the Algerian representa-
tive. Without defending his choice
of words, I believe it is arguable

that he
in any

did intend his contribution
aggressive spirit." Porter

expressed "disappointment at the

tons of some of the reactions to
Mr. Barromi's speech in sections

of the press and comment on the
radio."

He referred specifically to an
editorial in the newspaper Die
Transvaler which seemed aimed
particularly at South A f r i c a n
Jewry. The editorial said in part:
"A citizen of the republic who
after what has taken place in
New York (the UN) still fosters
sympathy for Israel, reveals that
he possesses no national self re-
spect and does not deserve to
enjoy the privileges which go with
citizenship."

NPD Anti-Semitism
Not 'Open' but Present

NEW YORK (JTA) — The top
leadership of the West German neo-
Nazi National Democratic party
(NPD), which won eight seats in
the Bremen Parliament last month
and thus raised to 48 the number
of NPD deputies in six provincial
Parliaments, does not use anti-
Semitism too openly but local NPD
leaders make no secret of their
"Nazi-like" position toward Jews,
it was reported here.
The report was made by Zacha-
riah Shuster, European director
of the American Jewish Commit-
tee, to the AJC headquarters here.
The report was based on talks with
West German officials during a
recent trip to Frankfurt and Bonn.
He said the Bremen victory, dem-
onstrating the hold of the neo-
Nazi party on voter support, de-
spite severe internal conflicts, was
causing serious concern among the
Christian Democrats and Social
Democrats, the major parties in
the current coalition government
headed by Chancellor Kurt Kie-
singer.
He reported that the local NPD
vxictories were not regarded as
necessarily forecasting similar suc-
cesses for the party in any future
federal elections. He reported that
recent public opinion polls showed
that the NPD would get only 4 per
cent of the vote if elections were
held today for the Bundestag, the
lower house of the federal Parlia-
ment.
