claimed by Arab and UN sources.
But a thorough study made by
a distinguished sociologist, D r .
Walter Pinner of Birmingham,
England, made public here by the
Economic and Social Research In-
stitute, disputes the widely dis-
tributed figures.
Dr. Pinner's contention is that
refugee figures have been padded,
that the UNRWA staff is composed
of about 12,000 Arabs, the majority
of them themselves being "fictiti-
ous refugees" and that the major
task of this staff is to inflate the
number of "Palestine refugees."
"The UNRWA figure of 1,317,749
refugees listed for 1966 is based
on a misrepresentation of the num-
ber of genuine refugees by three
of the host countries, Syria, Jor-
dan and Egypt in the Gaza Strip,"
Dr. Pinner charges.
He maintains that the real num-
ber of refugees in 1966 was 367,000
— 155,000 in the Gaza Strip, 75,000
in Lebanon, 115,000 in Jordan and
22,000 in Syria. Thus, he charges
that the UNRWA figure is 950,000
in excess of the real figure. Ile
states that most of the refugees
are working and as self-sustaining
people should not receive UN aid
— that Lebanon alone strikes

rolls of UN benefit recipients.
The difference between the fig-
ures he has established is ac-

Besides, there are protests here
that there is not a single known
Jewish member of the UNRWA
staff, the added charge being that
this UN staff is packed with Arabs
who are inflating the issue and are
acting as anti-Jewish agents.
Strong resentment is developing
over the functions of a UN agency
that is being used to spread malice
and hatred against not only Israel
and Israelis but against Jews
generally.

Refugees Must Collect
Their Rations in Person

(Direct JTA Teletype Wire
to The Jewish News)

JERUSALEM — The new policy
of the United Nations Relief and
Works Agency (UNRWA) requir-
ing refugees in camps to call for
their rations in person has stirred
a protest. Some inhabitants of
refugee camps near Jericho re-
fused to collect their rations Mon-
day although their ration cards are
valid, UNRWA sources reported
Tuesday.
The new policy of the relief
agency is intended to thin out the
padded refugee lists which. under
Jordanian rule, contained the
names of deceased persons. The
Jordanian motive was to keep the
official refugee figures as high as
possible.

The most expensive land in the
world is that in the City of London.
In September 1954. the 1,200-
square-foot Temple site at Buck-
lersbury changed hands for $840,-
000—$700 per square foot.
