Arthur Goldberg to Quit UN Job?

(Direct JTA Teletype Wire
to The Jewish News)

UNITED NATIONS — Rumors
persisted here Tuesday that Am-
bassador Arthur J. Goldberg, per-
manent representative of the
United States at the United Na-
tions, would resign his post next
month to enter politics or practice
law.
The rumors were strengthened
by the disclosure that Ambassador
Goldberg, a former Justice of the
U. S. Supreme Court, was admitted
to practice by the New York state
bar this week. He was qualified
by the state asnplation division on
Oct. 31. A spokesman for the
U. S. mision said, however, that
the admission of Ambassador
Goldberg to the New York State
Bar was simply a courtesy such
as was also extended to the late
Ambassador Adlai Stevenson when
he headed thet United States U.N.

MONTREAL—An Israeli freight-
er suspected of carrying an un-
declared cargo of small arms, out-
ran two Canadian Coast Guard
cutters last Friday. But Israel's
ambassador, Gershon Avner, denied
emphatically Wednesday that any
such cargo existed or that Israel
was importing arms from Canada.
The vessel in question was the
5,000-deadweight-ton cargo motor-
ship Nahariya of the Zim Lines,
which sailed from Pictou, N. S.,
after loading a cargo of lumber
and was bound for Sp a i n. An
"anonymous tip" that the ship was
carrying arms to the Middle East
without an export license led to
the chase, but the cutters were
unable to catch the Naharyia be-
fore she entered international
waters.
The episode was described in
the Canadian Parliament by Paul
Martin, minister of external af-
fairs, in reply to questions by H.
Russel MacEwan, member from
Pictou. Ambassador Avner said
alter that the "tip" was the result
"of an argument been Naharyia's
master and a stevedore."

Yemenite Transition

Special to the Jewish News

RISHON 1EZION, Israel—There
are marked transitions in Israeli
experiences, and a unique one
near here is the transformation of
an old plane into a restaurant.
The first large-scale migration
from Yemen into Israel after the
rebirth of the Jewish State took
place in 1949. This reporter saw
a group of these first settlers
alight from the plane on what had
become known as the Magic Car-
pet flight wearing clothes with
labels that read: "A matoneh fun
Joint"—"a gift from the Joint
Distribution Committee."
This is the plane that is now
being turned into a restaurant.
There is no end to the landmarks
of historic events in Israel.
