Two First Ladies Honored at Schaver Dinner; $1,000,000 Raised at Event Hosting Golda Meir Introduced as former foreign minister and "special minister for internal affairs of the Jewish spirit," Golda Meir conveyed Is- rael's hopes and needs to an audi- ence of some 1,000 Detroiters who came to honor her long-time friend, Emma Schaver. The Israel Miracle Year Dinner, Tuesday evening at Cobo Hall, had many highlights, among them the presentation to Mrs. Schaver of the Eleanor Roosevelt Humanities Award and the pledging of $1,000,- 000 by the assembled guests, rep- resenting every area of Jewish and general community life. Mrs. Meir recounted a long period of suffering by the Israelis, insisting "We have a right to de- mand that this war be the last one. The Arabs must sit down with us and recognize our right to existence. If they don't sit down, they will try war again." Israel stands alone in the family of nations, Mrs. Meir said. "When Israel walks into the United Nations, she has only one vote she can be sure of: her own. Everyone is equal in the UN, but Israel is a little less equal. "For 20 years, all the maritime powers of the world sailed through the Suez Canal; only Israel's flag was not admitted. Never again will we accept second-class status in the family of nations." With reference to the 50th anni- versary of the Boshevik revolution now being observed in the Soviet Union, Mrs. Meir commented, "I wonder if any of those leaders who celebrate tonight have a clear conscience. T h e revolutionaries who fought the Czar had ideals. Our boys faced tanks and not of Egyptian make, but of S o v i e t make. Evrey day, we find newt tanks in the Sinai desert — tanks with stoves and saws to cut down trees. These were designed for the desert?" Reiterating her country's desire for peace, Mrs. Meir said the Israel army goes into battle "when forced; others go into battle to kill, to blindly kill. Since we re- mained alive (in the Six-Day War), we are the targets of de- mands. T h e y ask 'Why do you hang onto the territory you won?' "I have some questions, also, to ask King Hussein. Your grandfather an- nexed it. "It took real hutzpa, didn't it, for the Israelis to stand up and defend themselves when you shelled Jerusalem." Israel has undergone three wars in 20 years, "but when was there real peace on Israel's borders? We love our army, yet they'll under- stand if I say I don't know who was braver, those who manned the tanks that mounted the Golan Heights of Syria, or the mothers down below whose children had to live underground for fear of being shot by the Arabs." Mrs. Meir recalled the message sent to the border settlers by the northern commander when the heights were taken: "Only from these heights can we see how big you are." As for the Arabs who live in the Israel-occupied areas, "We have brought them jobs and schools, roads, water and 'electricity. They have become different people." World Jewry's response during the Middle East crisis has brought strength to Israel, said Mrs. Meir. "Every Jew was doing something for himself; he realized that if Israel goes down, his life will be different. You and we have tasted the wonderful fruit of oneness. Israel is safe as long as we are together."
