Study Refutes
Anti-Semitism
Among Negroes

The Negro attitude towards
Jews is comparable to their atti-
tude towards whites in general.
Where it differs it tends to be in
favor of the Jews, reports Harvard
sociologist Gary T. Marx who di-
rected a nationwide survey of
Negro attitudes.
In contrast to widespread belief
of Negro anti-Semitism, Dr. Marx
found that Negroes are also less
apt to accept negative stereotypes
of Jews and do not share the tra-
ditional anti-Semitic biases.
The study, part of a five-year
research project on prejudice con-
ducted at the University of Cali-
fornia Survey Research - Center
under a grant from the Anti-De-
famation League is contained in
a book by Dr. Marx titled "Protest
and Prejudice," published by Har-
per dz Row.
The survey, based on public opin-
ion polls of 1,119 Negro adults
from both urban and rural areas,
found that the extent of anti-Semi-
tism among Negroes differs con-
siderably by region.
High scores on the anti-Jewish
index, Dr. Marx reports, were more
common among those living out-
side the South.

NEW YORK — The Jewish Theological Seminary of America
announced Tuesday that it had purchased from Columbia University
an entire square block on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, part
of which is presently occupied by the seminary and part of which
will be used to expand its facilities.
The purchase price was $2,300,000.
The property consists of apartment buildings which will continue
to be used as dwellings under their old management and rental
policies, the seminary said.
Two of the apartment buildings, acquired by the seminary in 1964,
are scheduled for demolition to make way for a new seminary library,
classrooms and other facilities.

HOUSTON (JTA) — Benjamin
R. Epstein, national director of the
Anti-Defamation League of Bnai
Brith, said here that virulent anti-
Israel and anti-Jewish propaganda
put out by the Palestine Libera-
tion Organization and the Palestine
Arab Delegation is disseminated
in the U.S.A. by two racist organi-
zations, the Student Nonviolent Co-
ordinating Committee (SNCC) and
the white supremicist National
States Rights Party.
Speaking before the ADL's na-
tional executive committee, Ep-
stein displayed copies of the
SNCC's newsletter and the States
Rights Party organ, "Thunderbolt,"
which showed the same "word-for-
word" dependence on Arab propa-
ganda material against Jews, Zion-
ism and Israel, although the white
and Negro groups are "polar op-
posites."

Epstein said that the SNCC news-
Then there is the expression of letter "parrotted whole sections of
personal friendship that is involved a 1966 Palestine Liberation Or-
in the coming to Detroit for the ganization diatribe produced in Le-
Nov. 7 event of Golda Meir, for- banon" while the "Thunderbolt"
mer foreign minister of Israel, reproduced whole paragraphs from
whose friendship with the Scha-
vers is of many years' duration.

Emma Schaver's name has been
linked with Zionist activities from
her earliest childhood. As a young-
ster of 11 or 12, when she already
displayed a great love for music,
she sang for Young Judaea groups
in the old Ahavat Achim synagogue
on Westminster and Delmar.

Emma's career was a rapid one.
When the United Hebrew Schools
staged "Samson and Delilah" in
Hebrew at Orchestra Hall, she was
the star. In operatic roles, as a
folk singer, she emerged among
the country's top singers.
Her genius as a folksinger is at-
tributable to her earnestness in ac-

quiring knowledge of the lan-
guages in which she sang. Her love
for Yiddish and Hebrew accounts
for her mastery of songs in the two
languages. She still is a favorite
when singing American songs as
well as operatic selections and she
has learned Italian to present the
latter in best fashion.

Mrs. Schaver has distinguished
herself in philanthropy. Together
with her husband, the late Morris
L. Schaver, she made many note-
worthy contributions. She has con-
tinued that tradition and is among
the most noted women in labor
Zionism, in Israel Bonds, in num-
erous Israeli projects as well as in
educational endeavors in this coun-
try.

Golda Meir and Abba Eban

Golda Meir will be here for the
Emma Schaver testimonial on Nov.
7 at a time when her services may
be required also in furthering Is-
rael's defensive position. Having
preceded Abba Eban as Israel's
foreign minister, she has paved
the road for an enduring position
for Israel on the international
arena.

Mrs. Meir has been recognized
worldwide as an educator and as
an outstanding diplomat. Dropsie
College for Hebrew and Cognate
Learning has invited her to address
the ceremony marking the induc-
tion of Dr. Abraham I. Katsh as
the third president of the college.
On Nov. 26 she will deliver the
First Annual Sol Satinsky Lecture
at Dropsie College.
