DUARTE, Calif. - A device
which places the newest advances
of computer technology at the ser-
vice of the surgeon has been added
to City of Hope facilities under
"New Horizons" expansion pro-
gram at the pilot medical center.
Called a Volemetron, the new
equipment is essentially an elec-
tronic computer and radiation
(gamma ray) counter, which auto-
matically determines blood volume.
Accurate measurements of blood
volume are vitally important for
diagnosis and treatment in many
situations, but especially in open
heart and other major surgical pro-
cedures.
The Volemetron employs a tech-
nique based upon injection into
the bloodstream of a small amount
of human serum albumin "label-
ed" with radioactive iodine. '
After the material has circulat-
ed and mixed evenly, a small blood
sample is taken and enables the
machine to automatically compute
the patient's blood volume from the
amount of radioactive isotope in
the sample. Compact, self-contain-
ed and mobile, the new diagnostic
device can be used at the bedside,
in the recovery or intensive care
room, or wherever needed.
Previous methods of blood vol-
ume determination required a mini-
mum of 30 minutes and sometimes
as long as 21/2 hours. With the
Volemetron, accurate data is de-
livered in approximately 15 min-
utes.
