PHILADELPHIA (JTA) — The
first recipient of the Humanitarian
Award of the Federation of Jewish
Agencies of Philadelphia will be
Walter H. Annenberg, publisher of
the Philadelphia Inquirer and a
former member of the Federation
board of trustees, according to
Frank L, Newburger, Jr., federa-
tion president. Annenberg will
receive the award at the federa-
tion's annual meeting Nov. 20.
Newburger said the newly-created
award is to be presented annually
to an individual distinguishing him-
self in service to others in keeping
with "Jewish and American hu-
manitarian traditions."

Samuel C. Kovan, president of

the appointment of Larry Stern as
youth director of the congregation.
Stern formerly served as youth
director at the North Suburban
Synagogue Beth El, in Highland
Park, Ill., where he headed up the
largest Conservative youth program
in the Midwest.
Stern received his BS degree in
recreational administration in 1962
at the University of Illinois. He
has extensive training and exper-
ience in Judaica and Jewish youth
work.
In 1963-64 Stern served as direc-
tor of youth activities, Kansas City
Jewish Community Center.

ed by sculptor Jacques Lipchitz
from the same statue he made for
the Society of Honor of the Reform
Jewish Appeal.
The statue was commissioned by
RJA as the 1967-68 addition to its
Distinguished Sculpture Series. A
limited number will be cast for
members of the society, a fellow-
ship of donors of $1,000 or more
to the RJA campaign.
Jacques Lipchitz titled his new
work "Samson and the Lion," de-
riving his theme from the biblical
quotation (Judges 14:5-6): ". . .
And- behold a young lion roared
against him. And the spirit of the
Lord came mightily upon him, and
he rent him as one would have
rent a kid."
When Jerusalem Mayor Teddy
Kollek asked him to create the
medal, Lipchitz wrote to fellow
sculptor Joel Meisner that ". . we
