WHY IS THE CITY
OF HOPE UNUSUAL?

55th ANNUAL

The City of Hope is a specialized National Medical Center
Center concerned with the catasrophic diseases of our
era—

Since its founding in 1913, the City of Hope has never
presented a bill to a patient for services regardless of
length of stay or of the complicated treatment involved.
The City of Hope was founded on faith — the faith
thtat Man is, indeed, his brother's keeper and is ever
striving to restore the afflicted to the fullest measure
of health, to their families, and to their social and
economic ways of life.

A 92 acre complex of hospitals, laboratories and other
buildings on beautiful landscaped grounds stand as a per-
manent recognition to these inspiring objectives.

HOW DOES THE CITY OF HOPE
PILOT IN PATIENT (ARE!

City of Hope
Launches New
Horizons Program

Advancements in diagnostic, surgical and other
therapeutic techniques—influencing patient care
methods everywhere — are among the abiding
objectives of the City of Hope. Leukemia is a
fatal malady, with present knowledge. But pro-
gress is being made. New chemicals, antibiotics
and new techniques help to prolong life. And in
this period the one medicine needed as much as
all others can only be given by a mother and
father: parental love.

A sweeping expansion program
of "New Horizons for a Pilot
Medical Center," launched in
1965, is carrying forward the
City of Hope's historic role of
seeking to influence medicine and
science everywhere.

Recognizing this, a Parent Participation Program
was inaugurated at the City of Hope in 1954.
The Children's Wing staff—pediatricians, nurses,
social workers, occupational therapists, psychi-
atrists and clinical psychologists welcome parents,
encourages them to take part in caring for their
children and offers emotional strength throughout
their tragic ordeal. And the Parent Participation
Program has proven itself in the person of the
mothers and fathers able, despite the crushing
blow ;to face life bravely as whole human beings
once again.

The five-phase, 10 million pro-
gran', includes the construction of
new buildings, initiation of new
patient care and research pro-
grams, improvement and expan-
sion of existing patient services,
extension of education facilities,
purchase of new equipment, and
remodeling and renovation of the
entire physical plant.

The Parent Participation Program is under con-
tinuing study through an unusual grant from the
National Institute of Mental Health. Thus, hospi-
tals everywhere may ultimately benefit from this
and other pilot programs in patient care at the
City of Hope.

By 1970, every patient will be
housed in a new or refurbished
building, all diagnostic and treat-
ment areas will be centeralized
and service department fully
modernized.

HOW ARE PATIENTS ADMITTED TO THE CITY OF HOPE!

Patients are admitted on the basis of (a) medical and (b) economic eligibility
and of course on (c) the availability of beds.
Initial requirement is a referral by a private physician to assure that the
applicant comes within the medical scope of the City of Hope and can be
offered some definite therapy for relief or cure. Only in this way can medical
eligibility be determined.

Economic eligibility simply means that the applicant is unable to afford the
full costs of care in a private medical facility. It is a fundamental principle of
the City of Hope that patients should not be pauperized as a prerequisite for
admission.
