UNITED NATIONS — Five Afro-

posed Wednesday inclusion of the
term: "anti-Semitism" in the draft
resolution on the elimination of
religious discrimination. now under
study by the Committee on Social,
Ilumbnitarian and Cultural Affairs
of the General Assembly. The five
countries are Kuwait, Mali, Paki-
stan.: Somalia and Iraq.
The Kuwait delegate, F. Sayegh,
alleged that "Israel intends to ex-
ploit :this reference to anti-Semitism
to sijence all criticism of its ac-
tions " He was supported by the
Byeliirussia delegate, V. Loshchio-
in. Who said that Israel's willing-
ness: to substitute "anti-Judaism"
for anti-Semitism to meet objec-
lions on the committee was a
"trick" to "drag in the concept
of the superiority of the Jewish
religion."
Earlier. reoresentatives of Leba-
non. Syria, the Sudan and Tan-
vinia expressed their opposition to
the inclusion of the term "anti-
Semitism" in the draft convention.
The representative of Lebanon
said "the Zionist leaders around
the world. by their actions and
statements. are actually fomenting
anti-Semitism." The representa-
tive of Tanzania said his delega-
tion was opposed to the singling
nut of one example of intolerance,
particularly when the example was
"contentious."
In Brussels, the Federation of
Belgian Jewish Soldiers and Re-
sistance Fighters urged the Bel-
gian delegation in the United Na-
tions to "strongly support the para-
graph condemning anti-Semitism"
in the proposed convention.

Israel had advised the Com-

mittee Monday that it was pre-
pared to consider deletion of the
term "anti-Semitism" and sub-
stitution of "anti-Judaism" wher-
ever religions are mentioned in
the draft convention. Previously
the American delegate had ex-
pressed readiness to agree to a
change in terminology.

port of Britain last week when

sentative in the committee, advo-
cated such a clause in the draft
convention. Thus she supported the
attitudes on this score expressed
previously by Mrs. Zena Harman
and Mrs. Patricia Harris. respec-
tively the Israeli and American
delegates participating in the com-
mittee's debate.
"During the last 100 years,"
Lady Gaitskell told the committee,
referring to anti-Semitism. "across
the Ebropean continent from the
Atlantic to the Urals, we have wit-
nessed barbarism on a scale never
seen before. We have witnessed
the most vicious persecution of
this minority faith, both through
pogroms and Nazi tyranny. This
explains why this particular form
of religious persecution was origi-
nally singled out for inclusion in
the draft and why delegations like
mine prefer this, rather than to
rest on the glib assumption that
this dark evil could never happen
again."

Earlier, Mrs. Harris answered
allegations made by the Soviet
delegate comparing the position of
the Jews in the United States un-
favorably with that of Jews in the
Soviet Union. Mrs. Harris said the
United States had no desire to

3 Returned, 1 Elected

in Ontario Elections

TORONTO (JTA) — Four Jew-
ish members of the Ontario Parlia-

ment were elected or re-elected in
Ontario general elections, accord-
ing to tabulations. Three incum-
bents are Alan Grossman, minister
of reform institutions in the Pro-
gressive Conservative government,
Toronto; Vernon Singer, deputy
leader of the Liberal opposition
party, who defeated his Jewish op-
ponent, Murray Chusid, of the New
Democratic Party by only 27 votes,
in Downsview, a Toronto suburb;
and Stephen Lewis, of the New
Democratic Party from Scarboro
West, another Toronto suburb.
The new Jewish member is Mor-
ton Shulman, a physician, known
as Toronto's "fighting coroner." A
former Conservative, he joined the
New Democratic Party and won a
seat from Toronto-High Park. Be-
cause of the closeness of the vote
in the Singer-Chusid contest, a re-
count has been scheduled.
