`Israelis Won't Be Left Unprotected'

JERUSALEM (JTA) — Prime Minister Levi Eshkol, speaking at - a
meeting of the Cabinet, declared Monday that the "base" Egyptian attack
and sinking of the destroyer Elath had "intolerable implications," and
that Israel's citizens and servicemen "will not be left unprotected."
Among those attending the Cabinet meeting were Capt. Shlomo Harel,
commander of the Israeli Navy, and Gen. Yitzak Rabin, Israeli chief of
staff. Capt. Harel, Gen Rabin and Defense Minister Moshe Dayan presented

Zeitlin Challenges Vadin's Views on Masada;
Maintains Sicarii Failed to Resist the Romans

The Sicarii, not the Zealots, were the deliverers of Masada to the Romans by an act of suicide.
Prof. Solomon Zeitlin. editor of the Jewish Quarterly Review, states in an essay "The Sicarii and Masada"
in the current issue of Jewish Quarterly Review. In a lengthy review of the role of the Sicarii, Dr.
Zeitlin takes issue with Prof. Yigael Yadin's account of that period in history in his book on "Masada"
(published by Random House) and draws extensivel!. upon Josephus to indicate that the Sicarii did not
resist the Romans and that:
"Josephus clearly distinguished between the Zealots and the Sicarii. In his book 'War' he makes
Sicarii 15 times as a party; In
50 references to the Zealots as a party, while he mentioned the
'Antiquities' he refers to the Sicarii but he does not mention the Zealots. This is due to the fact that the
accounts of the events given in 'Antiquities' terminate with the outbreak of the revolt against the
Romans in the year 65 while the Zealots came into being in the year 66. To call the Sicarii Zealots is
a distortion of historical fact and blurs the history of the last days of .Tudaea."
Emphasizing that "the Zealots and the Sicarii were two distinct groups and were hostile to each
other," Dr. Zeitlin states: "To write that the Zealots were in Masada for a considerable period is
tantamount to saying that after the Bolshevik revolution in October-November 1917 the Mensheviki took
possession of the Kremlin and remained there for a period of many years. It should be noted that Prof.
Zeitlin does quote from Yadin who wrote: "A
Yadin does not refer to the Sicarii in his book." But Dr.
minority of scholars have long suggested that the Qumran sect should be identified with the Sicarii
Zealots," and he states on this score: "Here he makes the only mention of the Sicarii, and this is in
referring to a minority of scholars." He charges that "this theory is not only untenable but false." that:
"Josephus who is the source for Zealots and the Sicarii and the main source for the Essenes does not
mention that the Essenes ever went to Masada."
Paying high tribute to Prof. Yadin's archaeological work and for his numerous discoveries. and
stating that "scholars will always be indebted to Prof. Yadin for the findings of his archaeological
expedition of Masada," Dr. Zeitlin
points to the "historical inaccura-
cies," declaring:
"The account of the expedition
is of great importance to archaeolo-
gists but it has no historical value
for the period of the Second Com-
monwealth and the siege of Masa-
da, since it does not provide any
new material which is not found
from other sources. To the con-
trary, in many cases it blurs and
sometimes distorts the history of
that period. The reason for these
defects is simply that Prof. Yadin,
though a distinguished archaeolo-
gist, is not a historian of Judaea
during the Hellenistic and Roman
periods."

Prof. Yadin's interpretation of the

Israel Goes Into Mourning

JERUSALEM (JTA)—Israel was in solemn mourning Monday as
funerals with full military honors were held for 17 officers and crew
members of the destroyer Elath, sunk by Egyptian missile craft off
the Sinai peninsula Saturday night.
Even as the dead were buried, the massive sea-air rescue oper-
ation that had recovered the bodies and lifted 150 survivors from the
choppy waters continued to press its search for 36 crew members
still missing. But at last reports, hopes for their rescue were fading.
Nevertheless, Israeli ships and planes maintained their vigil—and
their presence—in the waters where disaster had struck.

Haifa. Israel's chief seaport and naval base, was the scene of six

funerals. The bodies of six of the Elath's complement, including two
officers, were landed there Sunday night by a torpedo boat. Funeral
services were conducted at the base by Rabbi -Shlomo Goren, chief
chaplain of Israel's armed forces, as hundreds of relatives waited
anxiously for the survivors to be landed. They were landed in groups
and immediately issued new uniforms, pocket money and granted
half-day leaves to visit with their families and to attend the funerals
of their comrades. (See Elath story Page .12).

Survivors of the Elath, carried from helicopter on
stretcher, at Beersheba, and taken to a military hospital.
