Detroit Auto show Opens Nov. 18 at Cobo Hall THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Cars and stars is the theme of the nine-day 52nd Detroit Auto Show to be held Nov. 18-26 at Cobo Hall. The show will feature all of the 1968 domestic and import passenger cars, recreational ve- hicles, campers and motor homes, a twice-daily stage show and a fashion show. Chip Off the Old Bach Featured in Concert and affords Michigan residents an opportunity to see all the 1968 ve- hicles for the first time in one place. Shalom, once pride of Israel's merchant ma- rine, bid a sad farewell to the Port of New York when she sailed from here late Friday afternoon, Oct. 13, without pas- sengers on her last voyage under the Israel flag. The $20,000,000 luxury liner, built for the Zim Lines in 1964, was sold earlier this year to the German Atlantic Line of Ham- burg, which reportedly paid $16 million for her. Bach," the opening per- formance in the 1967-68 Founders Society Concert Series at the De- troit Institute of Arts auditorium, 8:30 p.m. Oct. 27. "Professor" Peter Schickele will expose this "oddest of J. S. Bach's 20-odd children" abetted by the Royal P.D.Q. Bach Fes- tival Orchestra of some 20 musi- cians. Schickele, who claims he is resi- dent musicologist at the University of Southern North Schickele Dakota, is a composer-musician who writes and arranges vocal and instrumental scores for theater and films, for notables like Joan Baez and Buffy Saint-Marie, and who has persuaded Vanguard Records to press a third recording of P.D.Q. this winter. The evening's program includes "Serenude in D Major for Devious Instruments" (among them, slide whistles, kazoos, tromboons, shower hose, windbreaker and strings), a special performance. of the "Un- begun Symphony," Prof. Schickele's own admitted composition, and a cantata, "Iphigenia in Brooklyn." The club will receive its charter at a formal inauguration to take place at the Tel Aviv Hilton Nov. 5. The guest of honor at the luncheon, given by the Variety Club of Great Britain, was Chaim Topol, one of Israel's leading actors, who plays the role of Tevye in "Fiddler on the Roof."
