Yiddish Still First
in World Press Survey

LONDON (ZINS) — A total of
933 Jewish newspapers and periodi-
cals in various languages are pub-
lished throughout the world, ac-
cording to a survey just completed
by the Jewish scholar, Joseph
Fraenkel. More than half of the
periodicals (513) appear in the
Yiddish language. 324 of the pub-
lications are in English and 248
are published in Hebrew. French
language newspapers number 62;
Spanish-45; German-36 and 65
in other languages. The largest
numbers of newspapers and peri-
odicals, 322, appear in Israel.
The second place is taken by the
United States where the number
of publications number 258.
The fact that out of 933 publica-
tions, 513 are printed in Yiddish
shows that Yiddish is still the
most widely read language among
Jews throughout the world.
