Catholic Weekly, Commonweal, Criticizes Hierarchy's Stand on Constitution

(Continued from Page 1)
published a five-page "fact sheet"
on Article XI Section 3—the Blaine
Amendment-Land what would be
the results of its elimination.
Earlier, the New York chapters
of the American Jewish Committee
and the American Civil Liberties
Union voiced opposition to the new
constitution. In Albany, the State
Congress of Parents and Teachers
Associations also came out against
the new constitution because it
would repeal the Blaine Amend-
ment.
The Union of Orthodox Jewish
Congregations of America, express-
ed the view that "the proposed re-
vision offers the citizens of the
Empire State a constitution that in
form and substance is a vast im-
provement over the current one."
In an editorial, Commonweal,
liberal Catholic weekly, criticized
the role of the Catholic hierarchy
on the new constitution. It said
there was a "fundamental deficien-
cy" because the hierarchy was

concerned with only one part of
the draft. The editorial warned that
"the inevitable conclusion is that
Catholic interest in the constitu-
tion is selfish and determined by
the opportunities the new consti-
tution would open up in the way
of aid to Catholic schools. It goes
almost without saying that this is
no reason to be for the new consti-
tution, any more than disagreement
on the point alone is sufficient
reason to be against it"
Proponents of the new constitu-
tion received powerful support
when Governor Nelson D. Rocke-
feller broke with the Republican
Party leadership in Albany last
week to urge ratification because,
he asserted, the good features out-
weigh the bad ones. The governor's
stand was sharply criticized by the
New York Times.
