20-Year Silence Broken as Shofar
Blown at Western 1 Wall; Moscow
Synagogue Jammed on Yom Kippur

JERUSALEM (J T A) — Over
10,000 worshippers assembled at
the Western Wall last Saturday
night to hear the sounding of the
Shofar, which traditionally marks
the end of the 25-hour Yom Kippur
fast. The crowd then broke into
the singing of Hatikva, Israel's na-
tional anthem, and "Ani Maameen"
—I Believe in the Coming of the
Messiah.
The Neila service, the closing
and one of the most significant
prayers of the Day of Atonement,
had been attended at the Wall by
members of the Israeli Cabinet, the
mayor of Jerusalem, members of
the Knesset and numerous rabbis.
The blowing of the shofar at the
Western Wall was prohibited by
the British since 1931, because of
Moslem opposition. In spite of this,
someone blew the shofar there each
year until the end of the British
Mandate, and the man doing so
was always sentenced to from three
to eight months in jail.
Saturday, after a 20-year silence,
the sounding of the shofar at the
Wall again marked the end of Yom
Kippur. Yesterday was also the
first time in over 30 years that
Jews were able to celebrate this
most holy of Jewish holidays at
the Western Wall, the holiest site
in Judaism.
Special Yom Kippur services
were also held at Rachel's Tomb,
outside Jerusalem, and at M'Orat
Hamachpela, the graves of the fore-
fathers in Hebron, by soldiers in
those areas. Mild weather through.
out Israel made outdoor services
comfortable.

Press dispatches from Moscow
reported that a large overflow
congregation attended Yom Kip-
pur services in the Soviet capi-
tal. According to the dispatches,
the Central Synagogue, on Arkivi-
pov Street, had drawn a parti-
cularly large crowd for the High
Holy Day services.

(Chief Rabbi Yehuda Leib Levin
of Moscow, who usually sends New
Year's greetings to the Israel chief
rabbinate two weeks before the
High Holy Days, sent belated
greetings this year, according to
Sephardic Chief Rabbi Yizhak Nis-
sitn's office. The greetings, it was
noted, were sent in reply to a New
Year message sent to Moscow by
Rabbi Nissim, when the customary
message from Rabbi Levin had
failed to arrive.)

Minister's Assaults
on Jewish Religion
Protested by British

LONDON (JTA) — A violent at-
tack against the Jewish religion.
published in a Church of England
parish magazine, drew sharp pro-
tests here from Jews and non-
Jews alike.
The attack was made by the
Rev. George Nicholson. who had
headed his magazine article "Syna-
gogue of Satan."

He wrote: "They (the Jews)
have a messianic mission to es-
tablish by their stranglehold on
world finance a Jewish-controll-
ed government in Jerusalem on
the strength of spurious inter-
pretation of prophecy. Jewish
ascendancy in America enables
anti-Christ to subvert Supreme
Court rulings and prevent reli-
gious instruction in the schools."
A copy of the magazine was re-
ceived in the mail by Donald
Black, a Jewish research scientist.
who complained to the Board of
Deputies of British Jews. The
Young Liberal Federation of South-
east England protested against the
article, and asked the Bishop of
Oxford to dismiss Rev. Nicholson.
The latter has denied he is anti-
Semitic, stating that he had only
drawn his attitude from the Bible.
"I am not a racialist," he said.

Baghdad, Iraq, just prior to and
during Rosh Hashana, it was
learned. For many of the Jews im-
prisoned during the High Holy Day
season, the action constituted a
second confinement, since they had
been arrested last June, after the
outbreak of the Arab-Israeli Six-
Day War, then released upon pay-
ing heavy fines.
The Jews in Iraq, of whom only
between 2,000 and 2,500 remained
until this year, have been sub-
jected to many harassments and
discrimination by the Iraq govern-
ment's increasing anti-Jewish ac-
tions since June 5. Their bank ac-
counts are frozen, they are for-
bidden to leave the country, and
they are denied the privilege of
communication with their families
abroad.
Meanwhile Dr. Nahum Gold-
mann, president of the 'World Jew-
ish Congress, said on his arrival
in Jerusalem from Zurich Monday,
that the WJC is maintaining con-
stant contact with governments
which have some influence in Arab

capitals on behalf of Jews living
in Arab countries. Special atten-
tion is being given to the plight
of Jews in Egypt, Dr. Goldmann
said.
