Sill, Okla., where he is on duty, Chaplain M. David Geffen (right) discovered an oil field called the Sholem Alechem, off State Highway 7. It is said to have been named in honor of the oil editor of the Daily Ardmoreite, Ardmore, Okla., in the 1920s. This newspaperman, William (Bill) Krohn, was very well liked by the oilmen, and on the night that oil began to flow from the well, Bill was right there on the rig floor getting first-hand information for his readers. The oilmen called it "Sholem Alechem" because of the greeting Bill used to give strangers in town, and for the Sholem Alechem Society he formed for oil men visiting in and around Ardmore. The field as a whole is very active. NewYear Book's Population Statistics number of Jews throughout the world is estimated at 13,538,000.
