BONN (JTA) — President Ha-
bib Bourguiba of Tunisia called on
the Arab countries to end their
state of belligerence against Israel
and proposed that Gamal Abdel
Nasser resign as president of Egypt
"in the best interests of a com-
promise with Israel and a solution
of the Middle East crisis." The
Tunisian leader told the Paris
daily, Fiearo, that if Nasser re-
signed. "it would be better for
Egypt and would make a solution
easier."
He said there was a possibility
of cooperation between Israel and
the Arab states but, to achieve
such a goal. "we would need other
men." Saying it was "impossible"
that Israel would not be prepared
for "peace or cooperation" with
the Arab states, he added that, in
that unlikely event, the Arabs
would be in a better position for
war.
Bourguiba said in a second in-
terview with the Stadtanzeiger of
Cologne, that the Arab states must
end their state of belligerence
against Israel if'they are to re-
trieve their territories now occu-
pied by Israel. He expressed "re-
gret" over the belligerency policy
that isolated the Arab states at the
UN and "cost them must sym-
pathy."
stering and rearming the Arab
states, it was noted here.

JEWISH KNOWLEDGE: Everybody talks about the need to strengthen
Jewish knowledge and Jewish identity among the young elements in
American Jewry . . . But very little — and in some cases nothing —
is being done to assist institutions engaged in the work of spreading
Jewish knowledge . . . Tale for instance the YIVO Institute for Jew-
ish Research . . For the ast three years it has been struggling with
courses on "Antecedents of American Jewish Life" for teachers in
the New York public school system . . . There are about 20,000 Jewish
teachers in the New York public schools, many of them having large
numbers of Jewish pupils in their classes . . . What do these teachers
know about American Jewish history? What do they know about Jew-
ish history in general? What do they know about Jewish literature?
What do they know of other subjects of Jewish knowledge? . . . It is
true that this army of Jewish pedagogues is not engaged in teaching
Jewish subjects, but would it not be helpful to them, as educators, if
they knew something about Jewish culture, past and present? . . .
Wouldn't such knowledge help them to implant more interest in things
Jewish in their Jewish pupils whose education they mold? . . . To the
praise of many of these public school teachers it must be said that
hundreds of them are seeking to join the YIVO courses . . . But the
YIVO is an institution with limited financial means . . . It cannot
accept all those who wish to register for the courses, because it lacks
the funds to accommodate them . . . Thus, only about 500 teachers
have attended these courses during the last two school years, while
hundreds of others who wanted to enroll had to remain outside . . .
And this, when the YIVO needs only the small sum of $1,500 to
maintain each course during the entire school year . . . The two
courses it maintains are being financed, one by the Nathan Chanin
Foundation of the Arbeiter Ring and the other by individual philan-
thropists who understand the value of such courses for public school
teachers who hold the key to the minds of Jewish children .. • This is
a project that should deeply interest the New York Federation of
Jewish Philanthropies . , . The Federation finances Jewish education
for school children through the Jewish Education Association. Why
should it not look also into financing Jewish education for public school
teachers? . . . It is an exceptional opportunity for the Federation,
especially since the YIVO courses are conducted with the consent
of the New York Board of Education . . . What better contribution to
strengthening Jewish identity can be made than providing Jewish
knowledge for Jewish teachers in city schools?
