Rabbi Bids 'Conscience of Mankind' to Aid Tortured Jews in Arab Lands

JERUSALEM (JTA)—The Chief
Rabbinate of Israel appealed Sun-
day "to the conscience of all man-
kind" to demand an end to "the
reign of black terror" that has
been unleashed against the Jews
in several Arab countries and for
which the governments of those
countries are held directly respon-
sible.
The appeal, signed by Chief
Rabbi Issere Untermann, will be
distributed to thousands of church-
men, public figures and heads of
humanitarian agencies. It details
the "daily torture, beatings and
humiliations" suffered by Jewish
citizens of the Arab countries,
often at the hands of former Nazis.
"All Jewish men in Egypt have
been imprisoned, including the
seriously ill," the Chief Rabbinate
declared. "In Cairo harsh restric-
tions have been imposed upon
Jews who have not been impris-
oned. Those that are imprisoned
have had their hands and ribs
broken, their hair shaven and
their eyebrows pulled out. In some
cases they are in the custody of
ex-Nazis who have found a haven
in Egypt.

and prayers proscribed. The
Chief Rabbi of Alexandria is in
prison and Cairo's Chief Rabbi
is under house arrest as is the
president of the Ashkenazi Jew-
ish community. In Syria, Jewish
quarters have been attacked by
mobs and a curfew hag been im-
posed on the ghettos which are
threatened with starvation.

Damascus Jews have been
thrown out of their homes which
have been given to Palestinians.
In Iraq, dozens of Jews have
been arrested on trumped up
charges of spying for Israel and
police have exhorted money
from Jews. The secret police
has begun to threaten Jews with
exporpriation and murder."

German Church Removes Remains
of Two 'Ritual Murder' Victims

NEW YORK — The remains of
two "ritual murder" victims have i
been removed from a Roman Cath-
olic Church in southwestern Ger-
many, thanks to a German-born
New Yorker and a West German
city official.
St. Peter's Church officials in
Endingen, removed the anti-Semitic
relics, the remains of two children
described as victims of a "ritual
murder" by Jews in 1470. For 500
years, they had been enshrined in
the church.
Toni Oelsner, a Jewish historian
who fled Germany in 1939, touched
off interest in the case four years
ago when she was doing research
on the Jews of medieval southwest
Germany.
A document she received from a
Freiburg, Germany, city official,
told of the "murder of Christians"
in 1470, when the Jews of Endin-
gen aroused the hatred of the
burghers "who no longer tolerated
them."

been stimulated to do thorough re-
search of the Endingen case. Last
year, his monograph on the subject
was published in Freiburg.
The case involved a family that
came to Endingen in 1462 and, un-
able to find shelter, was given the
use of a stable by the wife of the
rabbi.
The family was not heard of
again until 1470 when their bodies
were found, headless.
The rabbi and his two brothers
were accuted of "ritual murder"
and of having sold the children's
blood for ritual purposes to a
wealthy Jew. The three men were
burned outside Endingen on a hill
that still bears the name "Juden-
buck" (Jew Knoll).

Morocco to Reinstate
Expelled Zionist Lawyers

CASABLANCA (JTA) —• Two
Moroccan Jewish attorneys, who
had been expelled from a bar as-

sociation following charges that
they were Zionists, have been re-
instated following intervention by
the Moroccan justice ministry. The
advocates, Carlos de Nesry and M.
Zaoui, were reinstated by the Tan-
giers Bar Association.

"The severe loss of life, liberty
and property sustained by Jews,"
the Chief Rabbinate's statement
continued, "are the direct result
of governmental responsibility. At-
tempts by international agencies
to halt or at least modify the
reign of terror have been con-
temptuously rebuffed by the Arab
governments concerned. There-
fore," the Chief Rabbinate stated,
"we direct this passionate appeal
from Jerusalem to the conscience
of all mankind to raise its voice
and demand instant action to
stamp out this inhuman, cruel
and uncivilized wave of oppres-
sion directed against our people
by governments that give lip-serv-
ice to the United Nations Char-
ter."
