Happy New Year to Our Friends and Patrons

These people are talking about
jazz, the uniquely American art
form which was born in New
Orleans at the turn of the century,
and traveled to Chicago, Kansas 111
City, New York and Harlem, and
eventually to the West Coast and
Europe.
"Hear Me Talkin' To Ya" is the
story of jazz, told by the men and
women who live it. They talk about
themselves, about their music,
about each other, and about their
idols, such as Buddy Bolden, Bix
Beiderbecke, Bessie Smith, King
Oliver and Louis Armstrong. The
musicians themselves capture all
the candor, conceit, warmth, con-
tradictions, bitterness, nostalgia,
fulfillment and frustration which
permeates their careers, and which
makes jazz, for them, a way of life.
Edited by Nat Shapiro and Nat
Hentoff, contributors to many jazz
magazines and authors of "The
Jazz Makers," this book is com- •
posed of hundreds of personal in-
terviews, letters, tapes, and ex-
cerpts from previously printed
articles. Now reprinted by Dover
in paperback, it should be read and
reread by all jazz enthusiasts,
musicians, students of music, cul-
ture and American history, and
by general readers.

by counting off seven weeks after the beginning of the previous

What is the origin of the "Avinu Malkeinu" (our father, our
King) prayer which is offered on Rosh Hashana?
The Talmud (Tractate Ta'anit 25b) relates that Rabbi Akiva
composed the first verse of this prayer on one occasion of drought.
When he cried out "Our Father, Our King we have sinned before
Thee," the heavens opened and the rains came. Since then many
verses have been added following the style of this first verse (i.e. Our
father, our King), and these have been chanted on any day of trial,
tribulation and woe (e.g. a fast day, etc.) Rosh Hashana, and the
ten days of penitence that follow are considered days of judgment
and thus these verses are recited so that the Almighty will have
compassion on us during our hour of need. The verses towards the end
of the prayer have been composed as late as during the crusades
when there were so many innocent victims slain among our people.
We bring this to mind when we offer these prayers as if to say "we
have indeed• already been punished enough."

roundness of the HaIla eaten on the day of Rosh Hashana is a
replica of a crown. It is on .Rosh Hashana that the Jew expresses
the distinct feeling that the Almighty is the Supreme King of the
Universe. In an allegorical sense the Jew "crowns" the Almighty on
the day of Rosh Hashana. Texts of the liturgy often refer to such a
concept during the prayers of the day of Rosh Hashana. The roundness
of the halla thus becomes a symbol of the crown indicating the
unquestionable royalty and power of the Almighty who is the sole
judge and also the sole forgiver for the human race.
