Compou Season's Greetings (Copyright 1967, .1TA Inc.) The word "Messiah" comes from a Hebrew root "Mashach." mean- ing to "stroke" in the sense of drawing the hand over something. From this comes the Biblical ex- pression "Mashiach" which orig- inally meant "anointed" in the sense that the oil was spread over the object. Holy objects were thus anointed to make them sacred. The priests were thus anointed. as was the king. (Exodus 28:41: I Samuel 9:16). Anointing the king would thus establish that he was recognized 140-the Almighty. Ac- tually the king was referred to as "the anointed one of the Lord." In the Apocalyptic literature we find the term "Mashiach" or "Messiah" referring to the Mes- sianic king. With the termination of the Jewish State and the cessation of Jewish kings who personified the state of Israel, the hope for redemption and salvation became symbolized by the antici- pated reappearance of a king over Israel who would again be anointed and stand as a symbol of a sovereign state and an independent people. We do find a picture of the ideal king in the Book of Isaiah already (Isaiah 9:1-6). In time, it was the Messiah's role of the deliverer which was em- phasized more than the role of the kingship. It was this vision and hope that kept a persecuted people together. DAY'S FASHION SHOP Latest Apparel- !
