Friday, October 6, 1967-43 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Holiday Greetings A symposium on "Negro and Jew," edited by Shlomo Katz, pub- lished by Macmillan, views the developing "encounter" as having become a critical one due to the Black Power elements. The discussion in which eminent Jewish and Negro leaders parti- cipate candidly examines the emer- gence of Negro anti-Semitism. Prof. Horace M. }Callen ex- presses the view that "liberation from it must depend largely on steps taken by the authentic representatives of Negro Chris- tianity in this land." C. Eric Lincoln asserts that "few Negro leaders . . . believe there exists a significant reservoir of anti-Semitism among either Negro middle class or the black masses." He states that "Negro middle-class leadership has not yet been able to sell itself to the black masses with any degree of effectiveness" and that "any attempt to sell the Jew to the black masses at this time would be met with suspicion and resentment." At the same time, Gus Tyler writes that "the most difficult assignment in establishing a proper relationship between the Negro and Jewish . communities falls on the shoulders of Negro leadership."
