Powerful Bomb Found in U. S. Embassy in Tel Aviv
TEL AVIV (JTA)—The Israeli
authorities permitted publication
of the news Sunday that an unex-
ploded bomb containing five kilos
(11 pounds) of powerful explosives
had been found in the United States
Embassy here last Friday and dis-
mantled by police experts. Utmost
secrecy was maintained over the
incident until Sunday morning al-
though the information had spread
widely by word of mouth.
Police said that the bomb had
failed to explode by the margin
of only one minute. It was made
up of five metal pipes, each con-
taining one kilogram (2.2 pounds)
of high explosives and joined to-
gether by wires with a detonator
which was triggered by a Japan-
ese-made clock to go off at exactly
3 p.m. local time. The clock
stopped at 2:59 p.m., just 60 sec-
onds before.
Investigation revealed that the
bomb was actually in the em-
bassy for nine days before it was
discovered on Friday. It had
been placed in a black plastic
bag and checked in the cloak-
room of the embassy library.
When it was not claimed after
two days the bag was moved to
the embassy office. Workers
there became suspicious when a
claimant still failed to appear
for an item that seemed to them
"rather heavy" for its size. A
security officer checked its con-
tents and called the police when
he discovered they were explo-
sives.
said Syria could not disclaim res-
ponsibility for the El Fatah and
Palestine Liberation Front under-
ground activities in Israel and Is-
raeli-held territories.
They said that investigation of
more than 100 members of the two
organizations recently captured
had established the fact that al-
most all of them had gone through
training camps in Syria, had been
transported in Syria Army vehi-
cles, were trained by Syrian in-
structors and had been equipped
with Syrian arms and uniforms.
The Israelis also charged that
the Syrian Army had established
a special headquarters to activate
underground activities in the Is-
raeli-occupied territories and in
Israel proper and asserted that
this HQ had direct communications
with the Syrian chief of staff.
They said Major Sayil Souhil of
the Syrian Army directed this
headquarters and another Syrian
Army officer handled the transport
of the saboteurs from Syria to Jor-
dan and from Jordan to the West
Bank. Two training camps for sab
oteurs were located near Damas

Israeli sources do not overlook
the fact that the bomb may have
been placed in the embassy by
Arab extremists as a means of
undermining U.S.-Israel relations.
Special precautionary measures
were introduced at the embassy
Monday morning when the doors
were opened to the public seeking
admission to offices and the in-
formation library. EffectiVe this
morning, visitors to the embassy
and library will have to check their
parcels and portfolios at the en-
trance to the building and will have
to identify themselves.
Earlier three grenades found
near the home of Prime Minister
Levi Eshkol, which initially were
linked with the current Arab sabo-
tage, were reported by police to be
an obsolete type lacking detonators
and incapable of being exploded.
The discovery caused turmoil in
the fashionable Rehavia section of
Jerusalem, large parts of which
were sealed off and searched. Al-
though the hunt for clues contin-
ued, a police spokeman hinted the
incident might have been a prank.
Meanwhile, Gen. Moshe Dayan.
the Israeli Defense Minister
whose "off-the-cuff" estimates of
Israeli policy have agitated the
Arab states and disturbed diplo-
mats since the Six-Day War, has
given another interview which
was promptly construed as a
direct threat to the regimes of
Israel's Arab neighbors. In an
interview with the Army weekly,
Bamahaneh, Gen. Dayan spoke
enthusiastically of the cease-fire
lines as "ideal" and expressed
doubts that anyone could estab-
lish "more ideal borders than the
present ones."
He pointed out that, "after all,
crossing the Suez Canal means
that we are in the outskirts of
Cairo; crossing the Jordan, we
are near Amman, and just pro-
ceeding somewhat north of Kun-
eltra, we shall find ourselves in
Damascus."
In time of war, he added, it
might be necessary to enter one
happy, healthy and prosperous new year."
"May you be inscribed in the book of life for a
cision.
