ORT Women Gird for Campaign ;
Planning Membership Kickoff

Back from the Women's Ameri-
can ORT 19th biennial national
convention in Chicago, members of
Michigan Region are ready to
launch their fall membership
drive for which the kick-off affair
will be held 12:30 p.m. Oct. 17 at
Cong. Shaarey Zedek. Chairman
of the day is Mrs. Jack Lefton.
Teams of recruiters for new
members have been organized by
Mrs. Ben Brant, region vice presi-
dent of membership, and her com-
mittee; expansion chairman Mrs.
Milton Superstine, Mesdames Rob-
ert Kahn, Ira Rodman, Joseph
Kersman and Louis Hamburger;
re-enrollment chairmen Mrs. David
Zack and Mrs. Joseph Newman;
also Mesdames Max Beal, Stan-
ley Millman, David Edelman, Na-
than Weingarden, Alfred Koffman
and Herman Hack.
Mrs. Daniel C. Siegel, president
of Michigan Region, said the na-
tional goal for the next two years
is 12,000 n e w
members, to
bring ORT's to-
tal to 80,000 dues-
paid members by
1969, and to 100,-
000 (700 c h a p-
ters) by 1971.
In the past two
years 107 n e w
chapters in the
United State s
over - subscribed Mrs. Siegel
the goal, bringing the total to 578,
and Michigan region is ready to
charter two new chapters within
the immediate future: Sherwood
Village Chapter, whose president
pro-tern. Mrs. Harold Dean, will
accept its charter at the Oct. 171
affair, and a chapter in the White-
hall area, now in the process of
formation.
Chapters a r e competing to
achieve 100 per cent paid-up mem-
bership by Dec. 1 to be eligible
for the plaque awarded by nation-
al ORT.
At the national convention,
Abe Fortas, associate justice of
the U.S. Supreme Court, said that
no government or organization
may ask Israel to compromise
its integrity.
- Justice Fortas said that no one
"has the right to demand or ex-
pect that Israel should accept poli-
tical humiliation or any settlement
which invites renewed attacks upon
her—or that Israel should admit,
however indirectly, the legitimacy
of efforts to destroy her."
In his major address. Fortas also

praised ORT'S work as "the road
to the future." He said that we are
"embarked upon the road toward
rehabilitation of the desperate and
destitute through training for life.
"Salvation through the salvage
of people is tedious and laborious.
It is neither spectacular nor gla-
morous. To you, who are respon-
sible for this remarkable institu-
tion which has accomplished so
much, I express my admiration
and my best wishes for your con-
tinued success."
ORT, (Organization for Rehabili-
tation through Training), the
world's largest voluntary vocation-
al training system, currently op-
erates more than 600 installations
in 22 countries. Some 50,000 stu-
dents are annually enrolled in ORT
schools around the world: since
the program began operating in
1880, more than 1,000,000,000 dis-
placed and underprivileged people
have received ORT training.

The rarest of all mammals is three specimens were seen scurry-
