Etzion Resettled; Tragedy of 1948 Recalled

JERUSALEM—An advance par-
ty of young settlers moved Wed-
nesday morning into the former
Jordanian Arab Legion camp on
the site of Kfar Etzion and form-
ally reestablished the Jewish settle-
ment there which the Jordanians

destroyed in 1948. The new settle-
ment stands on the site of the four
settlements of the Etzion bloc in
the Hebron hills, between Hebron
and Bethlehem, on land owned by
the Jewish National Fund.
The new settlement is under aus-
pices of Nahal, the paramilitary
youth pioneer organization. The

Soviet Anti-Israel Incidents Continue;

LONDON—The official campaign
against "Israeli aggression" launch-
ed by the Soviets during and since
the Six-Day June War continues
unabated throughout the Soviet
Union with anti-Semitic overtones,
it was reliably reported here Wed-
nesday from the Soviet Union.
According to an eye-witness re-
port, one anti-Israel meeting burst
into pandemonium when a mem-
ber of the audience declared that
it was time "to finish with the
Jewish race, not only in the Middle
East but everywhere." The state-
ment evoked shouts of protest from
other members of the audience,
some of whom walked out of the
ball and refused to return until
the meeting sponsors removed the
man who made the anti-Semitic
remark.

to Retire as Head

NEW YORK (JTA) — Gottleib
Hammer will retire on Oct. 1 as

Shipping Company, Inc., a post he
has held since 1955.
The company is the North Amer-

Israel's major shipping enterprise.
Hammer had been largely in-
strumental in the American con-
cern in 1948 when it was needed
to charter ships to transport food
and other supplies to Israel. He
became its treasurer in 1952 when

new settlers have been drawn
mainly from the Bnai Akiba youth
movement of the Mizrachi, the reli-
gious Zionist group. Most of them
are the children of the original
Etzion settlers. About 200 residents
of the settlements were slaughter-
ed in 1948 after the Arab Legion
captured the settlements and left
their defenseless residents to the
mercy of Arab gangs despite pro-
mises that they would be treated
as prisoners of war.
Before setting out, the young
men visited the graves of their
parents. An armored bus, of the
type that was used in 1948 to
lead the convoys from Jerusalem
to the besieged settlements, was
at the head of the procession.
An old, two-wheeled watertank
was towed in the procession by a
pickup truck. On arrival at Et-
zion, many of the settlers recited

ing the lessons of the Sinai Cam-
paign with the help of the Israelis"

ings in southern Russia.
Another popular theme spread,
presumably with official Soviet
blessings, is that "racial discrimi-
