NEW YORK-The Anti-Defama-
tion League of Bnai Brith has
called upon the federal government
"to throw its force and weight" be-
hind ending housing segregation.
In a statement submitted to the
housing and urban affairs subcom-
mittee of the Senate Committee
on Banking and Currency, Eugene
L. Sugarman, chairman of the Lea-
gue's discriminations committee,
called housing segregation one of
"the root causes" of racial unrest
in American cities.
Sugarman said further delays in
bringing federal power to bear "can
serve only to increase the danger
of new riots and loss of faith in
the democratic way of life by those
who are the victims of such dis-
crimination.
"So long as housing segregation
continues," Sugarman said, "it will
be difficult if not impossible to
deal successfully with segregation
in schools, with discrimination in
employment and with segregation
in all other aspects of our national
life."
