Delegates Hear Gains of Pioneer Women

CHICAGO (JTA) — Membership
in Pioneer Women, the Women's
Labor Zionist organization of
America, has increased by 4,000
in the past two years, and the •
number of its local chapters had
increased by 19, Mrs. Rose Kauf-
man, national president, reported
to the organization's 20th national
biennial convention here Monday.
She told the 600 delegates.

for Jewish educational and youth
work in this country in addition to
$3,500,000 for Israeli purposes. The

over $8,000,000 in Israel Bonds
since the last convention, bringing
to over $30,000,000 million the total
it had sold since the first Israel
Bond campaign.
Mrs. Lea Rabin, wife of Maj.
Gen. Yitzhak Rabin, chief of staff
of the Israel Defense Forces, told
the convention that "When war
was pt stake, everybody in Israel
felt that it was a simple question
of live or die, to be or not to be,
and with a great desire to live,
the nation stood up against this
threat—one body, one heart, one
soul."
I. L. Kenen, executive director
of the American-Israel Public Af-
fairs Committee, told the conven-
tion that the United Nations could
make its greatest contribution to
peace by calling on Israel and the
Arab states to sit down together
to talk.

Jack Abramson, Mrs. Bruce Koploy

will be presented at the combined
opening fall meeting of Detroit and
South Oakland Chapters 12:30 p.m.
Tuesday at Cong. Shaarey Zedek.
Mrs. Eugene Kahn, vice presi-
dent of the program of the South-
field Group, states that this musIcal
is an updated version of "Any
Tuesday" with the addition of
several new songs. Members of the
cast are Mesdames Morton Benson,
Joseph Bittker, Van Dyan, Eugene
Hirsch, Jerome Hirsch, Ernest
Mendelsohn, Burton Mintz, Sey-
mour Schwartz, Herbert Stoorman,
Lawrence Strager, Donald Sofferin
and Irving Yura.
Mrs. Norman Rosenfeld and Mrs.
William Deutsch, program vice
presidents, arc in charge of the
program.
Mrs. Mortimer Jacobson, Hadas-
sah's First Lady, who recently re-
turned from Israel, will tell of
some of her experiences in relation
to Hadassah's contributions and
responsibilities. Mrs. Jacobson will
also bring news of Hadassah's 53rd
national convention, over which
she presided in Miami Beach Sept.
17-20.
All contributors of $100 and
more to the current fund-raising

honor of Mrs. Jacobson.

Mrs. Carl Schiller, leader of the
50-day tour which will leave New
York on the S.S. Queen Anna
Maria Oct. 9, advises that space is
available. The tour will visit Portu-
gal, Italy and Greece, arriving in
Israel Oct. 24 for three weeks.
During the stay in Israel, it will
include the dedication ceremony
of the Lindenbaum Nurses Resi-
dence which was the gift of Mr.
and Mrs. Harry Lindenbaum in
memory of their parents.

Schedules Open House

Detroit Council of Pioneer
Women will hold its annual mem-
bership open house 12:30 p.m.
Wednesday at the Labor Zionist

Shirley Kraicer, director of tourist

department of Moetzet Hapoalot.
"Beauty on Parade" will be pre-
sented by the Pioneer Women
Players, and dessert tea will be

Music Study Club Plans
for Annual Artist Concert

Mrs. Ben Meckler, vice-president
in charge of concert, has set up all
plans for the Annual Artist Con-
cert, to be held by the Music Study
Club at the Scottish Rite Cathedral
Nov. 26. Ellen Zoe Hassnlan, cellist,
and Louis Nagle, pianist, have been
selected.
Mrs. Saul Schmidt and Mrs. Ed-
ward Rothenberg are patron chair-
men. Mrs. Albert Letvin and Mrs.
Samuel Stulberg are ticket chair-
men.

Guest speaker at the general
meeting of the Detroit Section, Na-
tional Council of Jewish Women,
noon Wednesday at Cong. Shaarey
Zedck will be Dr. Bruno Bettel-
heim, prof essor of education,
psychology and psychiatry at the
University of Chicago and director
of the Chicago Orthogenic School.
Dr. Bettelheim will speak on
"The Changing Role of the Child
and Adolescent in his Family and
Modern Society."
Born in Vienna, Dr. Bettelheim
was graduated from the University
of Vienna with a PhD in psychol-
ogy and philosphy. He is the author
of many books on child rearing
and at present has articles appear-
ing monthly under the title "Dia-
logues for Mothers" in the Ladies
Home Journal.
A buffet luncheon will be served
and a prize given. The meeting is
open to everyone, but there will be
no charge for council members.
