American Jewish Congress Scores Ignorance
of Black Nationalist Attacks on Israel

Black nationalist attacks against
Israel were described last weekend
by the American Jewish Congress
as demonstrating "vast ignorance"
of Middle East history and "a
complete disregard of the facts of
Israel's close and positive rela-
tions with the countries of Africa."
In a sharply worded statement,
the Congress charged the Student
Non-Violent Coordinating Commit-
tee (SNCC) and other "extremists"
with "inciting primitive anti-white
and anti-Jewish sentiments" while
supporting the Arab cause.

In its reply to SNCC and what
it termed other "black racists,"
the Congress declared:
"It is evident that the charge
accusing Israel of being a creature
and agent of colonialism is utterly
without substance.
"Israel's relations with the new
nations of Africa . . . have been
unusually warm and mutually
helpful.
"The record is clear: Israel has
been accented as a friend and
colleague by the independent
African states; it has not been
preceived as a 'colonialist tool' by
those immediately involved."
The Congress quoted a state-
ment by President Jome Kenyatta
of Kenya to Israeli Prime Minister
Levi Eshkol on June 15, 1966,

relations have been based on
friendship, understanding and

to express our appreciation of
the assistance which your gov-

tended to this country.
"Your people have shown
what a smdtl country can do for
itself through hard work and
faith in its destiny. The good
example of Israel has been a
useful lesson in which other
developing countries are trying
to follow. In this country, we
are putting into operation the
same belief in labour and self-

Similar expressions of friendship
for Israel were cited in the docu-

Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie;
Prime Minister Leonard Mulamba
of the Congo; President A. Milton
