Friday, September 15, 1967—S THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Boris Smolar's I 'Between You . . and Mei ELKIN TRAVEL DOES IT AGAIN! (Copyright 1967, JTA Inc.) ISRAEL BONDS FRONT: The new $500,000,000 Israel Bond drive which is being proclaimed this weekend at a three-day national conference in New York is actually a continuation of the current $400,000,000 Bond issue which was sold out in this country earlier than expected . . . The successful sale was due to the Israel-Arab Six-Day War which ended so gloriously for Israel .. . The amount of money raised during that critical period for Israel through the sale of Israel Bonds can still not be revealed . . . But it is sufficient to state that more Bonds were bought by Jews — and non-Jews — during that brief period than during a full year of the sale of the Bonds under "normal" circumstances . . . Visualizing that before this year is over, there will be no Israel Bonds of the current issue left for sale, Dr. Joseph J. Schwartz, the able and highly respected executive head of the Israel Bond campaign, advised the Israel government of the necessity to plan a "renewal" issue of the Bonds — and this time for $500,000,000 ... The emotional buying of Israeli Bonds started when Nasser transferred a large part of his armed forces to the Gaza area and placed them face to face with Israel . . . It was then clear to every friend of Israel in the United States that this meant war against Israel and that Israel would need cash — a lot of cash — to maintain its economy during the war . . . Nobody could, of course, predict how long the war would last, but Jewish leaders in this country mobilized American Jewry for immediate and maximum financial aid to Israel through the United Jewish Appeal and the intensified sale of the Israel Bonds . . . The results of the response are by now too well known as a milestone in the history of American Jewry . . . They will never be forgotten also by the Israelis when the history of the Six-Day War will be written from a wider perspective. • • FACTS AND FIGURES: To realize to what extent the Israel Bonds were bought in the critical days of the Six-Day War, it is sufficient to say that organizations and groups which never bought Israel Bonds, had this time acquired Bonds in the worth of millions of dollars . . . The Federation of Jewish Philanthropies in New York — one of the Jewish bodies that never bought Israeli Bonds — had in those days purchased $1,000,000 in bonds . . . So did the Jewish Federation in San Francisco ... So did other Jewish and non-Jewish groups, includ- ing labor unions which have practically no Jewish members . . . To ay. The United Automobile Workers Union has a very large folio of Israel Bonds . .. The Teamsters Union and other unions portfolio can also boast of having large investments in Israel Bonds . . . What is even more striking is the fact that, in recent years, more than 1,200 American banks have acquired substantial amounts of Israel Bonds . . . And banks, as it is well-known, do not invest in bonds just for sentimental reasons ... This can also be said about the 1,700.000 individ- uals who subscribed to Israel Bonds during the 16 years of the bond sale . . . A great majority of them are, of course, Jews; but the records of the New York headquarters of the Bond campaign show that quite a number of non-Jews have purchased the bonds . . . This is because the Israel Bonds have provided themselves a very good investment. paying good interest and being redeemed in good Amer- ican cash . • • • A "GOOD SELLER": Israel Bonds — the cash of which is being used by the Israel government for expanding Israel's economy — had been a "good seller" all these years and there is no doubt that the new $500.000,000 Bond issue will be even a greater success . . . It is quite clear that at least for the next 10 years the Arab rulers will not dare to engage in a war with Israel . . . And who knows? Maybe within the next few years some kind of an understanding for peace- ful co-existence may be reached between the Arab states and Israel . . . Investments in Israel are therefore now safer than ever before. and buying Israel Bonds is definitely now safer than during the critical days of the June war when the sale of Israeli Bonds reached its highest peak in the United States . . . Unusual economic achieve- ments are anticipated in Israel, now that war clouds no longer hang over the country . . . Even before the June war, Israel was concen- e development of profitable industries to increase its trating n The new Bond issue will enable Israel to go further and export . faster ' the development of its economic potentials . . . American who have for the last years bought more and more Israel Bonds mostly for sentimental reasons, will now intensify their buying. con- sidering Israel's potential for future growth and the factor which motivates investors in general. -- — Baltimore Sun Warns Against Mixture of Black Nationalism, Anti-Semitism BALTIMORE (JTA) — The Baltimore Sun warned Monday that anti-Semitism was being mixed with Black Power extremism to create "an indigestible political stew, which, if swallowed could be poisOnous." In an editorial-page column. Gerald Griffin said that Black Pow- er advocates had displayed anti- Semitism "too many times to be accidental." He said that "those who make use of it describe their position as anti-Zionist rather than anti-Semitic but in the context of their resolutions and literature. this distinction is not impressive." The article held that "this ex- ploitation of anti-Semitism by Black Power extremists appears to stem in part from the Com- munist line of support of the Arab states vs. Israel, in part from feelings among Negroes in the slums against some shop- keepers and in part from the sheer opportunism and irrespon- sibility which make anti-Semi- tism profitable to white racists. It feeds on the worst -human in• stincts, as Hitler demonstrated. The appalling irony now is that the Black Power extremists have made themselves look so much like the white supremacists:" Reference was made to the re- cent "new left" convention in Chi- cago with the comment that "this political mess attempted at Chi- cago is as ugly as it is potentially poisonous, and its implications should be widely understood." Extreme black nationalism, the article said. "promises violence and destruction." But when, it added. "a streak of anti-Semitism. typical- ly blind and nasty, is applied to black nationalism, along with an assortment of Russian, Chinese, and Castroist Communism, the pro- ! duct is thoroughly vicious. Wheth- er its fomenters know what they are doing, or are groping in the darkness of their impassioned ig- norance. the result is equally de- plorable and obnoxious." 2ND ANNUAL "IBERIAN SOJOURN" A FABULOUS 15 DAY HOLIDAY TO MARBELLA — MADRID — LISBON — ESTORIL DEPARTING DIRECTLY FROM DETROIT DECEMBER 21 — FEBRUARY 8 — MARCH 9 VIA BOAC VC 10 JET '599 FLIGHT: HOTELS: ■ k EALS: Per Person Double Occupancy Children Under 12, $399 Plus $7.00 for Tax and Services en- V I P. treatment.
