An exhibit of the works of A.
Raymond Katz entitled "New Me-
dia, New Methods: New Meanings"
will be the first exhibition at the
Community Church Art Gallery, 28
E. 35th St., New York, for its 1967-
68 season. It will be open to the
public from Sept. 20 to Oct. 14.
Raymond Katz, internationally
known painter and muralist, was
the first artist to pioneer the He-
brew alphabet as a meaningful art
form, and his semi-abstract oils,
watercolors, ca s ei n s , frescoes,
stained glass and now relief paint-
ings in mixed media make for an
interesting progression.
Katz began his career in the stu-
dio of Frank Lloyd Wright, and it
was Wright who urged him to be-
come a muralist. Since then, he
has designed murals and religious
art for over 200 synagogues
throughout the United States, in-
cluding the Stephen Wise Free
Synagogue in New York City. Katz
has exhibited in major museum
group shows throughout the coun-
try and in Europe.
The artist is a member of the
National Society of Mural Painters
and the Guild for Religious Archi-
tecture.
Katz' published works include:
"White on Black," a portfolio of 20
brush drawings, "Adventures in
Casein," "A New Art for an Old
Religion" and "The Ten Command-
ments," a portfolio in full color.
The brush drawings (a number of
which were in the collection of
Frank Lloyd Wright) are inspired
by the biblical "Song of Songs."
Othe publications are now in work.

The world record for hand-shak-
ing was set by President Theodore
Roosevelt, who shook hands with
8,513 people at the 1907 White
House New Year's Day presenta-
tion.

Sayings of the Yzal •

• 30810 SOUTHFIELD

The "Yud" (Yerachmiel of Par-
sischa. died 1836) became danger-
ously ill, and the inhabitants of his
town proclaimed a fast for his
speedy convalescence. A villager
chanced to come to town and went
to the tavern for a drink of brandy.
Several townsfolk overheard him
and informed him that drinking
was prohibited for the day.
The villager at once went to the
synagogue and prayed: "0 Lord,
please cure the Holy Rabbi so that
I may have my drink."
Soon thereafter the Rabbi began
to recover his strength, and he
then declared to his followers:
"The prayer of the villager was
more acceptable than any of yours.
His expressed the greatest longing,
and the most earnest supplication,
for my quick recovery."
• •
Said the "Yud": We find that a
father strives to help his son to
become a learned man and pious
Jew. When the son grows up, he
in turn endeavors to make his own
son become a good Jew. But will
the time ever come when the
father himself will strive to be a
good Jew, instead of leaving this
task to his son?"
• • •
Said the "Yud": "Accustom thy-
self to generosity by degrees. At
first refuse not a request for a
pinch of snuff, for the light of a
match, or for other gifts. Such
petty kindnesses will broaden thy
heart so that thou canst habituate
thyself to helping thy fellow-men
in great ways."
