Rockwell's Death Recalls His Detroit 1963 Visit; Launched Attacks on Jews, Negroes, Unitarians The murder last Friday of George Lincoln Rockwell, founder and fuehrer of the American Nazi Party, by one of his own fellow- Nazis, in Arlington, Va., not far from the Nazi headquarters, re- calls the American Nazi leader's visit here on June 17, 1963. In his speech he gave in the backyard of an associate, Russell Roberts, on Grand River in Farm- ington, Rockwell predicted he would be in the White House in 1972 and he formulated his views on Jews, communism, Negroes, American leaders and religion. In that speech he charged that Jews were "race mixers." He referred to Philip Slomovitz, edi- tor of The Jewish News, as a "Jewish instigator" and it was apparent that Roberts and his cohorts were avid readers of The Jewish News and that they had shared their sentiments with Rockwell. A copy of that week's Jewish News was displayed at the entrance of the Roberts' home during Rockwell's visit. In his address here, which was covered for The Jewish News by two young Jewish News staff mem- bers, Richard Aptekar and Rich- ard Hendin, Rockwell said: "Nas- ser will certainly receive a lot of help from me; and the Jews had better get water-wings." He was referring to Nasser's threat to push the Israeli Jews into the sea. He linked Jews with Negro leaders, communism, President Kennedy, Martin Luther King, American Civil Liberties Union (which provided him with a Jew- ish defense attorney when he was - arrested in New York), the Uni- tarians and others in his charges of treason and in his threats that he would exterminate his enemies. The photos shown here were taken at the Detroit Rockwell ral- ly for The Jewish News by Robert Golden and Barry Kaplan. The up- per photos show Rockwell and his henchmen at the Detroit rally. The lower photo shows Rockwell at that rally displaying a Hebrew school primer: Pointing to an Aleph he said it was the equivalent of the hammer and sickle. His headquarters across the Potomac River from Washington. The decision to cremate the body came after the Army had denied the Nazis permission to bury him in the national cemetery at Cul- pepper and after the party said legal tie-ups had prevented his burial at their farm in Spotsylva- nia, Va. Six other cemeteries also rejected Rockwell's body, they said. Rockwell's successor, Matt Koehl, said he was seeking aid from the American Civil Liber- ties Union to have Rockwell's ashes buried at Culpepper. A Nazi memorial service was held by party members at their headquarters. Three American Nazis were arrested at the funeral of the murdered Nazi leader Tuesday when they tried to enter the cemetery at Culpepper, wear- ing their Nazi armbands. Military police barred entry of Nazis as they tried to rush through with the coffin. Among the three ar- rested was a GI on active duty, according to police. The cemetery at Culpepper is a national facility, containing chiefly the remains of some sol- diers who died in the civil war. The cemetery is under the juris- diction of the United States Army. Monday night, the army ruled that, since Reckwell had been honorably discharged from the Navy after service in World War II, his body could be interred at Culpepper, but it was ruled clearly that no swastikas or other Nazi embellishments would be permit- ted. Tuesday morning, a group of Nazis from the Arlington, Va., headquarters maintained by the party, arrived with a coffin con- taining Rockwell's remains, wrap- ped in the flag of Germany used by Hitler. The superintendent or- dered the Nazis to remove their swastika armbands and forbade them to enter until they did so. Disregarding that order, the Nazis tried to use the coffin as a wedge for breaking into the burial grounds, military policemen then went into action, barred the way and arrested three of the Nazis plus the soldier who had joined their ranks. end came in a parking lot adja- cent to a shopping center across the street from the Nazi headquar- ters. Arlington authorities had per- mitted Rockwell to make his head- quarters there since 1959 when he organized the American Nazi Party. He used Arlington as a base from which to stake demonstrations and agitation forays into the Dis- trict of Columbia, a few miles away. Rockwell advocated the gassing and sterilization of Jews and the deportation of Negroes to Africa. In 1959 he converted his "World Union of Free Enterprise National Socialists" into an outright Nazi Pary. Rockwell established chap- ters in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York and other cities. He attracted a small but fanatical following in- cluding a few members and vet- erans of the Armed Forces. Rockwell served many years in the U. S. Navy and re'ched the rank of lieutenant commander. He was forced to retire in the late 1950's when passed over for pro- motion. Rockwell sought to international- ize his movement and tried to es- tablish contact with neo-Nazis in West Germany, British anti-Sem- ites, and fringe elements in other nations. John C. Patter, 29, a former member of the American Nazi Party, is being held on the charge of having mur- dered his former fuehrer. The murder weapon was found by the police shortly after the murder.
