Friday, September 1, 1967-5 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS UN May Intervene in Defense; of Jews in Egypt, Syria, Iraq . UNITED NATIONS, N.Y. (JTA) — Secretary-General U Thant is considering "the use of his good offices" in the matter of persecu- tion of Jews in some Arab countries, as requested by the permanent representative of Israel, Ambassador Gideon Rafael, who met with him on this subject, it was learned here. Thant brought up the matter at a meeting he held Tuesday with the Egyptian ambassador to the United Nations, Mohamed el Kony. (In London, the World Jewish Congress received a letter from I.D.M. Reid, director of the British Red Cross department of inter- national affairs, stating that Jewish civilians in Egypt, Iraq and Syria, who are victims of Moslem oppressions as a result of the June war, are being aided by the International Red Cross.) Rafael requested Thant to "take appropriate measures" for action in regard to the "persecution and degrading treatment, of the Jews in certain Arab countries," naming specifically Egypt, Syria and Iraq. Rafael. who was accompanied by his deputy, Shabtai Rosenne, told the UN chief that Israel's government views the mistreat- ment of Jews in the Arab countries as a matter of "grave humani- tarian concern." An Israeli spokesman said that his government has recently received from most reliable sources authentic reports about the de- plorable conditions of Jews in those countries. The reports concerned imprisonment of Jews, some held incommunicado; deprivation of de- cent livelihood and physical threats.
