Dr. Bernstein's Commentaries
"On Modern Science and Origins"

Dr. Jeremy Bernstein, distin-
guished physicist, a consultant to
General Atomic Corporation, delves
into historic mysteries, comments
on the theory of evolution, portrays
distinguished personalities a n d
their attitudes and ways of life—
men like Einstein, Bohr, Oppen-
heimer, many others—in "A Com-
prehensive World: On Modern Sci-
ence and Its Origins," published
by Random House.
Scientists will be especially de-
lighted by his recollections and
comments and the humor he
quotes. Lay leaders will find equal
interest in this work and will be
enlightened on many issues and
events. For instance, in his intro-
duction, he writes:
"The time I spent in the phy-

sics department at Harvard was
at the height of the McCarthy
terror. 'Terror' is the only word
that does justice to that period—
especially for physicists. Be-
cause of their role in weapons
work, and because of their gen-
erally outspoken liberalism, phys-
icists were especially open to the
kind of attack and smear that
McCarthy specialized in. If Mc-
Carthy had been allowed to car-
ry on much longer, physics in
the United States might well

have been ruined, just as phys-
ics in Nazi Germany WAS ruined
by Hitler. As it is, almost all
physicists who remember that
time, including me, have come
away with a profound sense of
what a tyrant can do to a com-
munity."
Dr. Bernstein not only evaluates

science and scientists but also has
a good sense of the historical. He
resorts, for instance, to the follow-
ing:
"The Old Testament attempts to
provide an evolutionary timetable,
and a mechanism, an omnipotent

God, who has created the world in
six days. Even the most devout
readers of the Bible are now for
the most part willing to agree that
this timetable is allegorical. Indeed,
by the time Christ was born, stu-
dents of the biblical version of the
Creation were already emphasizing
its allegorical character. The Toul-
mins (Prof. Stephen Toulmin and
his wife) quote the writings of
Philo, Alexandrian Jew born about
20 BCE, who made an extremely
subtle investigation of the biblical
allegory:
"'And in the sixth day God fin-
ished his work which he had made.
'It would be a mark of great nai-
vity to think that the World was
created in six days, or indeed in
Time at all; for Time is nothing
but the sequence of days and
nights, and these things are nec-
essarily connected with the motion
of the Sun above and below the
Earth. But the Sun is part of the
heavens, so that Time must be
recognized as something posterior
to the World. So it would be cor-
rect to say not that the World was
created in- Time, but that Time
owed its existence to the World.
For it is the motion of the heavens
that determines the nature of
Time."
There is a sense of humor in
Dr. Bernstein's critical work, in
dealing both with history and peo-
ple's beliefs and evolution. And
there is realism in his commen-
taries, as exemplified by this:
"As to the meaning of the whole
evolutionary drama? One can la-
ment, with Tennyson:
'0 life as futile, then, as frail !
0 for thy voice to soothe and
bless !
What hope of answer, or re-

British Labor Delegation

of Histadrut in Israel. They ex-

issues they had discussed.
They especially referred to their
participation in ceremonies mark-
ing the opening of Histadrut House
in the Old City of Jerusalem,
where they had met and addressed
Arab workers and had emphasiz-

joining Ilistadrut. They also were

Catholic Prelates Told
How to Understand
Contemporary Judaism

12—Friday, September 1, 1967

Rabbi Stuart E. Rosenberg,
spiritual leader of Beth Tzedec
Congregation here, and a writer
on Jewish theological subjects, ad-
dressed the International Congress
— devoted to "Theology of the Re-
newal of the Church" — on the
sulfect of "Contemporary Renewal
and the Jewish Experience."
Rabbi Rosenberg, speaking at
the final session of the four-day
gathering, sponsored by the Catho-
lic Bishops Conference in honor
of Canada's centennial, pointed out
that Christian students of the Bible
today can no longer bypass the
Talmud or the medieval rabbinical
commentaries in the effort to un-
derstand contemporary Judaism.
Christian scholars who want to
engage in useful dialogue with
their Jewish counterparts, he said,
"will have to face up to the in-
eluctable fact that Jews will sim-
ply not conform to the image
projected for them in classical
Christian theology, nor will they
generally accept a fraternal dia-
logue with those who can conceive
of Christian renewal only on Chris-
tian terms which overlook the
renaissance of Jewish life and
vitality in the State of Israel."
