JWV Activities Youngest 'Veteran of World War I to Receive Amerie an Legion Honors When Ben Edelstein was 14, he wanted to serve his country in World War I. lie enlisted in the U.S. Army, but after two months, his age was discovered, he was given an honorable discharge. Ben was determined, the next time he enlisted in the U.S. Air Corps, still giving his wrong name and age . . . This time his age was not discovered. Ile served from December 1917 to March 1919. When he was discharged he was not yet 17. Today the Detroiter is possibly the youngest World War I veteran in the United States. Early this year, Mr. Edelstein's doctor found it necessary to re- move one leg. There was no im- provement in Mr. Edelstein's con- dition so the doctor had to remove the other leg, making Mr. Edel- stein a double amputee. At 8 p.m. Mrs. Brandwine Heads 'Miracle Year' Fete Mrs. Morris J. Brandwine will he the chairman of the Israel "Miracle Year" luncheon to be sponsored by the Israel Bond Wom- en's Division noon Sept. 21 at Cong. Bnai David. Guest speaker will be Abbie Ben Ari, director of the Israel Government Tourist Office, who has served his government on special missions as an advisor to young, developing nations. Mrs. Brandwine has just re- turned from Israel, where she toured the newly conquered areas with her husband and son.
