TEL AVIV (JTA) - The Acre
municipality and former members
of the underground Irgun Zvai
Leumi commemorated Sunday the
20th anniversary of the storming
of the Acre prison fortress used
by the British Mandatory regime
to hold underground resistance
fighters.
Scores of members of the Irgun
and the Stern group, another anti-
British underground movement,
were released in the attack on the
fortress.
The occasion also was a me-
morial day for 11 Irgun members
killed in action in the battle against
the mandatory regime and three
others who were captured and exe-
cuted by the British. A lane lead-
ing to the fortress, through which
the attack was mounted, was nam-
ed "Stormers of the Fortress
Street" during the ceremony.
A cornerstone was laid for a
monument for Irgun victims of
the mandate in the presence of
Menachem Beigin, former com-
mander of the Irgun and now
minister without portfolio.
