:5 z Flint Community News Opposition to Open Occupancy Assailed Two Jewish leaders in Flint said that "the hopes and aspirations of 15,000 Negro families in our com- munity" died Monday night when the City Commission turned down an open occupancy ordinance. The two are Joseph Megdell, president of the Flint Jewish Com- munity Council. and Michael A. , Pelavin, chairman of the council's Community Relations Committee They said it is **altogether shock- ig" that open occupancy need be the object of legislation "but how much more shocking that during these critical times an ordinance merely legislating those rights which have been preViously grant- ed should fail." Megdell and Pelavin added: "The shortsightedness and polit- ical expediency evidenced by five of our city commissioners last night was a disgrace to our city and a direct insult to our fine mayor." By the end of this year, he said, 22,000 new jobs will be created "through the natural increase of the labor force." He said 32.593 unemployed were registered as jobless with the labor exchanges during the first week of August. Of that total. Alton reported, 21,- 000 were given work on job-relief projects.
