Why is it customary to Pro-
nounce a blessing over spices
and to smell them on Saturday
night?

The Tosafot Commentary (Babli,
Betza 33b—"Ki") explains that
this is done because on the Sab-
bath every Jew receives an "ad-
ditional soul" which leaves him
with a feeling of void and despond-
ency. He thus inhales the spices
to brace his spirit against this loss.
Another such medieval source (To-
safot Pesachim 102b "Rab") ex-
plains that the spices are inhaled
because, while during the day of
the Sabbath the fires of Gehenna
(i.e. Hell) are stilled, they start
again at the exit of the Sabbath.
This brings back the smoke and
odor, as well as serving us as a
reminder that the fires of Gehen-
na are burning again. The Tur
(Orach Chayyim 297) states that
man's despondency is not over the
the additional spirit he loses at
the end of the Sabbath but simply
because of the fact that the Day
of Rest is coming to an end and

Flounders With
Rabbis' Departure

PARIS (JTA) — Grand Rabbi
Moshe Malka, vice president of
the Casablanca Rabbinical Tribu-
nal, has left Morocco to settle in
Israel.
The grand rabbi delivered a ser-
mon Aug. 5 at the synagogue in
the Olim camp in Marseille in
which he stressed the obligation of
every Jew to help Israel during
its present difficulties.
The grand rabbi's departure re-
portedly was felt keenly among
the dwindling number of Casa-
blanca Jews. Departures are be-
coming more frequent and many
well-to-do Jewish families are leav-
ing. Two other members of the
rabbinical tribunal, Rabbi Itzhak
Hazan, Rabbi Malka's assistant,
and Registrar Chalom Israel, left
with the grand rabbi.
The departure of the three rab-
binical leaders was viewed as a
symptom of the disintegration of
the Moroccan Jewish community,
but the fact that the rabbinical
tribunal was no longer able to
function was regarded as e v en
more serious. There are now only
two members left on the tribunal,
its president, Grand Rabbi Chalom
Messas and Rabbi Rahamin Bena-
mara.
