SUMMER MOODS: Speaking at summer resort places to highly
educated American Jewish youths, one gets the impression that the Power and Arab Power in their of sustaining a free Israel.
On the domestic scene, the ad-
six-day Arab-Israeli war had opened new avenues of thought in the racism and infantile capacity to
minds of many young Jewish people who were inclined more toward bring down their houses upon their vocacy of urban reforms and civil
assimilation than toward Judaism . . . These youngsters were pri - own heads, the State Department rights will be more carefully ex-
marily interested in issues on the American scene—Vietnam, Negro has recommended new arms ship- amined. Legislation will be judged

annihilation of 6,000,000 Jews by the Nazis, these American Jewish
thinking youngsters, conscious of their being part and parcel of the
Jewish people, asked themselves the question: "Are 2,000,000 more
Jews going to be annihilated and thrown into the Mediterranean, as
threatened by the Arabs?" . . . A few days later, when the Israeli
army startled the world with its victory, these very same youngsters
—no longer afraid of what may happen to the Jews in Israel—began
to ask themselves another question: "What makes the Israelis tick?"
Their interest in Israel suddenly became as serious as the interest
they had hitherto displayed in American issues . . . They are now
asking more and more questions about Israel, the mode of life there,
and the underlying motives that make the Israelis—especially the
young Israelis—so enthusiastic about their country . . . They are
fascinated by the heroism of the young and old in Israel, displayed
during the brief and decisive war, and they cannot help but ask
themselves a few more pertinent questions . . . One of these is:
"What would have happened to the Jews in Israel had the Arabs
won the war? How would other nations have acted had the Arabs
invaded Israel and carried out their pogrom plans there?" . . . This
question alone makes them feel that, in critical times for Jews, the
world—even the democratic world—finds all kinds of excuses to
avoid effective action . . . Sympathy—yes; but only with words, as
in the case of Hitler's mass-killing of Jews . . . In the case of the
Arab-Israel war, many of these liberal-minded Jewish youngsters
were especially shocked by the attitude taken by France at the United
Nations, and even by the lukewarm stand taken by Britain . . . This
stimulated them to think more Jewishly and to realize that, in times
of need, the best friends of the needy Jews are Jews.
SERIOUS TEST CASE: It should, however, not be taken for
granted that the effect of the recent events in Israel which shocked
these assimilation-minded American Jewish youths and adolescents
into a stronger feeling for Israel and toward Jewishness cannot eva-
porate very soon . . . As time marches on and life in Israel becomes
normal, the Israeli situation may again become a matter of remote
interest to these young Jews who are used to thinking in terms of
world problems more than of Jewish problems . . . The responsibility

for holding their interest in Israel and in things Jewish, therefore,
falls now upon American Jewish leadership . . . This is a serious
test case for Jewish organizations in this country seeking ways and
means to strengthen Jewish feelings and responsibilities in the younger
generation . . . The door has been opened for them now, when many
of the younger Jews in America are psychologically ready—and even
eager—to learn about Jewish past and present . . . The door may
close for them again soon if they will not understand how properly
to utilize the present moment . . . The challenge is great . . . Among
the young Jews with whom I spoke were intellectuals and profes-
sionals whose parents brought them up far from anything that is
Jewish . . . They are now beginning to disagree with the assimila-
tionist attitude of their parents . . . However, they are not in posses-
sion of enough Jewish "ammunition"—Jewish knowledge—to even
argue with their parents, except on an emotional basis . . . Will the

according to State Department
sources.

King Hussein has made known
that his country is still very
much allied to the Arab power
extremists who have moved into
closer collaboration with Mos-

cow.

Rep. Joel T. Broyhill, Virginia
Republican, told the House that he
rejects the State Department thesis
on arms for the Arabs. "Perhaps
we will next hear someone advo-
cate that we send arms to the
Block Power fanatics in Detroit,
Cambridge, or other places so that
they won't have to rely upon Com-
munists for arms," he told Con-
gress.
"In the absence of Arab willing-
ness to live like reasonable, peace-
ful neighbors, the arming of either
Black Power or Arab Power ad-
herents is equally absurd," said
Broyhill.
Representing the Virginia side
of the Potomac River, Broyhill's
constituents include more Penta-
gon and Central Intelligence Agen-
cy employes than may be found in
any other Congressional district.
He represents military officers and
others sensitive to recent Com-
munist moves in the Middle East.
After evaluating the Arab-Is-
raeli conflict, he noted that "the
Arabs have advocated Viet Cong
tactics in their drive for power
and in liquidating all free world
interests in the Middle East."
He saw an analogy in American
domestic strife, pointing out that
Black Power agitators Stokely
Carmichael and II. Rapp Brown
"have advocated Viet Cong tac-

argue with their parents, except on an emotional basis . . .
PAST AND PRESENT: In my talks with some of these otherwise
very knowledgeable young men and women—some of them working
as book editors and in American mass-media institutions—I was
amazed to discover how little they know of their own Jewish history.
. So were they themselves after I cited to them a number of facts
from the Bible dealing with the same principles for which liberal
Jewish youth is fighting now . . . We discussed, for instance, the
question of civil rights . . . How long is it since President Lincoln
freed the Negroes in this country from slavery? . .. Compare it with
the fact that our Jewish forefathers have preached anti-slavery some
3,000 years ago . . . The Bible definitely urges that a servant must
be set free after seven years of service .. . If he says he prefers to
remain a servant, the Bible orders his owner to bring him to the
threshhold of the house and to pierce his ear publicly . . . This means
to put him to shame and to pain in public, with the hope that he may
change his mind and decide after all to become a free man . . . Only
after he goes through this humiliating and discouraging procedure
and still prefers to remain a slave can he serve in the Jewish family
to which he attached himself . . . Considering that even today there
are countries in the Middle East where slavery is practiced, the
Jewish anti-slavery approach sonic 3,000 years ago is something for
every modern Jew to be proud of among the teachings of his past.
. . A similar principle is applied in the Bible to the question of
becoming a conscientious objector in time of war . . . The anti-war
demonstrations and the tearing up of mobilization cards which takes
place in the United States now with regard to Vietnam were not
necessary in the time of the Bible . . . Way back, some 3,000 years
ago, the Bible provided that any young man who said he objected to
going to war should not be taken into the fighting forces . .. Other
similar problems for which idealistic young American Jews are fight-
ing now, had been solved in a simple humanitarian way by the Heb-
rews in Biblical times, showing the remarkable sentiments for rights
and justice which the Jews of ancient times preached and practiced.
. . When liberal American Jewish students—who put the fight for
civil rights and against war in Vietnam above matters of Jewish in-
terest—are told of these ancient Jewish teachings, they are impressed.
. . . They begin to understand what is meant by speaking of "Jewish
heritage." . . . Jewish leaders interested in implanting Jewish feelings
in the younger generation—and to stimulate respect for Jewish values
—should therefore not limit themselves to speaking of ''Jewish heri-
tage" merely as a slogan .. . They should develop practical programs
comparing present ethical values with Jewish teachings and philoso-
phies of all times.
