War jokes

TEL AVIV—The formation of a
worldwide "Friends of the Hista-
drut" movement was proposed
here Tuesday by Aharon Becker,
general secretary of the Histadrut,
Israel's labor federation. He made
the proposal at a conference with
leaders of the Ihud Olami, the
World Union of Labor Zionists;
and representatives of Mapai,
Mapam and Ahdut Avoda, the
major Israeli labor parties.
He conceded that Histadrut had
concentrated too much on the over-
seas trade union movements and
to a lesser extent on the problems
of world Jewry. Ile said the only
exception was the Histadrut cam-
paigns in the United States and
Canada, which attracted more
general Jewish public s•ipport.
He said his proposed "Friends
of Histadru t" organizations
should be set up in Western
Europe, Latin America, North
Africa and Australia, among
other sections and that the pro-
posed worldwide movement
would stress aliya as one of its
basic programs.
It was also disclosed that 37
British teachers and trade union
leaders were currently attending
a special seminar in Israel on
adult education under IIistadrut
auspices.

U.S. Freighter Detained
at Haifa Under Claim by
Injured Israeli Worker

HAIFA (JTA) — The American
freighter "Globe Explorer" was
detained here Aug. 3 in compli-
ance with a court order stemming
from a claim for compensation for
injuries suffered by a Haifa dock
worker on the ship.
Chaim Dedanon was at work on
the vessel on a previous visit when
he was struck by a stream of hot
vapors from a broken tube. He
was taken to the hospital and while
he was there the ship left for
America. The worker filed suit
for 115,000 pounds ($37,000) in
damages.
On the vessel's current visit, a
Haifa attorney received a deten-
tion order barring the ship from
sailing until its owners provide
adequate assurances they will deal
with the lawsuit.

No sooner did the guns cease to
roar in the Middle East than the
jokes began to crackle.
Time Magazine published a
cluster of jests inspired by the
six-day (or was it three-hour?)
war. At a great Madison Square
Garden gathering, Sam Levenson
said the program had already
lasted longer than the war.
Another comedian brought the
Garden down by saying: "Will
Rogers said he never met a man
he didn't like. He neve• met the
UN ambassador from Bulgaria."
One of the best collections of
these witticisms is a little paper
booklet, "Blintzkrieg," that sells
for a dollar and is published by

Israeli Police Probe Theft From

JERUSALEM (JTA) — Israeli
police opened an investigation of
the theft last week of a priceless
gold tiara and a gold heart-shaped
locket from the Church of the
Holy Sepulchre in the old section
of Jerusalem. The tiara was taken
from the head of a wooden statue
of the Virgin Mary.
The church, one of Christianity's
holiest shrines, has been guarded
for decades by one Moslem guard
under arrangements with Christian
denominations using the church.
Similar arrangements were estab-
