East remained at its normal (1)
state of tension, the six days of
the war might have found Dr.
Ernst continuing her studies in
the immunity-reactions of cells
under the direction of Dr. Michael
Sela at Israel's famed Weizmann
Institute in Rehovot. Her place of
study adds another improbable, yet
somehow fitting, touch.
Dr. Ernst is only one of 100
physicians and scientists who,
thanks to the Cancer Society's
program, have been enabled to ob-
tain further practical experience,
following receipt of their doctorate
degrees, in fields relating to can-
cer. Her experiences at the begin-
ning of June were, however, not
typical of other "post-doctoral fel-
lows."
What she was observing was the
face of war, seen up close. As she
noted in a letter to her grand-
mother in Pennsylvania:
"The fact that the Israelis cre-
dit me with some courage these
days is probably one of the finest
compliments I'll ever have. Little
do they know that I draw mine
from their own courage. They are
a heroic people."

U.S. Conservative Rabbis,
Histadrut Plan Program

TEL AVIV (JTA) — A joint
program to bring Israeli and
American Jewry closer together
was informally approved by offi-
cials of the Histadrut, Israel's
labor federation, and members of
a visiting delegation of Conserva-
tive rabbis of the Rabbinical As-
sembly of America.
The proposal was the theme of
speeches made by Aharon Becker,
Histadrut secretary-general, and
Rabbi Wolfe Kelman of New York,
executive vice president of the
rabbinical association, at a fare-
well party given by Becker to the
visiting rabbis. They attended a
seminar at Beth Berl arranged by
the Histadrut. The program will
begin with exchanges of scholars
and joint adult education institutes.

for Dr. Ernst stemmed from the
fact that, although a foreigner, she
did not retreat before the bombs
and the bullets. Rather, she gave
of her medical skill to help repair
the damage wrought by steel and
lead—some of it whizzing across
the sands, some of it falling from
the skies.
Dr. Ernst found the difficulties
were not insuperable. As she her-
self stated: "The soldiers atz---
brave and still sort of `fighting
mad' when they come in. They
are still used to responding quick-
ly and are excellent patients."
