He said West Bank farmers will be encouraged to plant green vegetables, tobacco and cotton. The changes will be- come effective when the next planting season starts in October. He also noted that the Jordan- ian government had discouraged West Bank farmers from tobacco growing because this conflicted with the interests of East Bank farmers. He added that the West Bank farmers also had no exper- ience in growing cotton. They will be taken to see farms operated by Israeli Arabs who grow cotton. Is- raeli Arabs also will be sent to the West Bank as instructors. The Israeli pound is now the only legal tender in the Gaza Strip and in the Golan Heights in Syria. In the West Bank both the pound and the Jordanian dinar are legal tender. Most West Bank shops now carry Israeli-made consumer goods, particularly groceries and soft drinks. A few still have stocks of foreign-made merchandise b u t these are mainly such durables as furniture and mechanical toys. Meanwhile refugee traffic in both directions across the Jordan River was reported as increasing, partly because some refugees are going into Jordan to visit relatives and others are going there to cash checks which cannot be cashed in the West Bank area because banks have been closed in the section. The arrangement of transit across the river has become a routine operation handled by professionals Western Wall to Be Excavated (Direct JTA Teletype Wire to The Jewish News) JERUSALEM—Plans were disclosed here Tuesday for ex- cavation of some lower tiers of the Western Wall in East Jeru- salem. The decision to deepen the most sacred shrine of Judaism was made at a meeting of cabinet ministers, archeologists and architects which was held near the shrine and approved by Israeli religious officials. Officials said there was some evidence that the wall ex- tends 20 tiers below the surface but that digging for the time being would be for only a few tiers. The five lower tiers now above ground reportedly date from the Second Temple in the era of King Herod. Some of the lowest tiers may date back to the First Temple, which was built by King Solomon and razed by the Babylonians. Moshe Dayan, Israel's defense minister, protested Monday to the United Nations that Egypt was violating an Egyptian-Israeli agreement made last week which barred either country from using the Suez Canal for the month of Aug- ust. The agreement was negotiated by Gen. Odd Bull, the :IN repre- sentative for cease-fire affairs. Gen. Dayan told Gen. Bull at a meeting here that armed Egyptian soldiers were seen last week on ships in areas of the canal where there are no stranded Vessels. The agreement provided that ships of the Suez Canal authority could service foreign ships stranded in the canal after Egypt sank a num- ber of vessels during the June war to blockade the waterway. Israeli officials said no naval craft are moving along the eastern bank except on Bitter Lake. Is- raeli officials were considering a warning to Egypt, through Gen. Bull, that if the Egyptians con- tinued patrolling, Israel would fol- low suit. Earlier, Israel announced of- ficially that its military forces Sunday morning blew up a house in Nablus, on the West Bank of the Jordan, from which several shots had been directed at Is- raeli border police and at an Israeli jeep. The announcement stated that the trajectory of the shot fired at the jeep had been traced to the house, and it was found that all the shots had come from the same building, fired by a single person. Last week, Israel blew up a house in the Gaza Strip after arms were found concealed in the dwelling. Gen. Dayan reported these ac- tions to the meeting of the Cabinet Sunday. He also reported about the sporadic firing by Jordanians on four successive days to which Israel responded. Those shootings took place in the area of the Da- miya bridge over the Jordan River. The cabinet discussed Sunday the issue of the Arab refugees who fled the West Bank of the Jordan River into Jordan, follow- ing Israel's occupation of the river's western shores.
