• Friday, August- 4, 19672-7 Apartment Project for Elderly Nears Reality ' THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS (Continued from Page 1) The apartment residence would be designed to assure semi-inde- pendent living for elderly people who are economically independent but of modest means. The report stated that the great- est housing need was for single elderly people rather than for couples so that the greatest num- ber of units would be of the studio efficiency type with screened off kitchen areas and bed areas to give pleasant living room. There no health services would be' planned, adequate protective de- vices such as grab rails and panic buttons in the bathrooms, lower , lightswitches, wider doors and lower stair lifts and other con- veniences for the elderly would be installed. Plans are to have a re- tired nurse in residence. Leisure time activities would be available at the nearby community center but residents would be en- couraged to develop their own rec- reational outlets with the apart- ment house. would also be some one and two- bedroom units which might be oc- cupied by couples or by unmarried relatives such as elderly mother and daughter or sister and brother. Each unit would have a private bath as well as furnished kitchen appliances. One kosher meal a day would be furnished in a central dining room. In planning the residence it was recognized that elderly people often take short cuts in their own care and that one hot meal a day would be a protec• tion to the health of the resi• dents. The committee found in explor- ing the experiences of other Jewish communities in housing for the elderly that the average ages of the occupants of the residence would be in the early 70's. While SNCC Let tier Says 'Negroes Resist,' `Won't Play. Jews' WASHINGTON (JTA ) — Black Power leader H. Rapp Brown, national chairman of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Com- mittee, sought to compare the sit- uation of Negroes with that of Jews in Nazi Germany and .be- littled the lack of resistance by the Jews. Brown told a press conference at SNCC headquarters that "if you (whites) intend to play Nazis" in suppressing Negro violence, "black people ain't going to play Jews." The SNCC leader is free on bond awaiting charges of inciting riots and arson. He will be tried by Maryland authorities for causing a riot and destruction in the town of Cambridge. Brown said "violence is necessary" and that "if Amer- ica don't come around, well burn it down." Explaining why Negroes would behave differently than European Jews, Brown said "violence is part of America's culture and is its American as apple pie."
