Mrs. Hershman's Role as Founder
of Women's League Told in History

A prominent Detroit woman play-
ed an active role in the founding of
the National Women's League of
the United Synagogue of America,
a historical record of the League,
published this week under the title
"They Dared to Dream," indicates
in its compilation of 50 years of
activities.
The late Mrs. Abraham M.
Hershman, the wife of the late Dr.
A. M. Hershman, who for half a
century was the
spiritual leader
of Congregation
Shaarey Zedek,
was one of the
founders of the
National Wom-
en's League and
in 1918 served on
the executive
board of the
league and at-
tended the board
meetings.
In the volume
tracing the his-
tory of the
League, there is
a record of the Mrs. Hershman
activities of many prominent wom-
en and there is a record of the
sociological and political develop.
ments, economic and military up-

reflected in the changing focus and
added programs of the League
which, from its founding by Mrs.
Solomon Schechter in 1918, has
grown from a handful of women on
the Eastern Seaboard to an inter-
national body of some 200,000, the
largest synagogue women's organ-
ization in the world.
"They Dared to Dream" is the
story not only of National Women's
League, its leaders and its achieve-
ments, but of the developing com-
munity through war and peace, the
destruction of Europe's great Jew-
ish centers, the establishment of
the State of Israel and the matur-
ing of American and Canadian
Jewry. Human touches make the
picture come clear, as the work of
women advances from the "Ladies
Benevolent Society" to the highly-
structured sisterhoods of today's
synagogues, carrying on sophis-
ticated programs of education and
social action.
