The book, "The Detroit Yiddish Theater," by James Miller, covers the period 1920 to 1937. Primarily the story of the Yiddish stock company of Abraham Littman, it records a picture of the cultural life of the Detroit Jewish com- munity during the '20s and '30s. * Miller, a scenic artist at the * J. L. Hudson Co. and a parttime instructor at Wayne State Univer- sity, was the scenic artist .at the Jir Yiddish Playhouse from 1924 to 1927. He is not Jewish. In his book, Miller traces the development of the Yiddish thea- ter from its beginning in Romania in 1876 until the eventual passing of the professional Yiddish stage. He tells the stories and assesses the contributions of the Circle Theater on Woodward Ave. and finally of Littman's Peoples Thea- ter until it closed in 1937.
