Israeli Heroism Spurs Hollywood

By HERBERT G. LUFT

(Copyright 1967, JTA Inc.)

HOLLYWOOD — "David and

Goliath" is the symbolic title of a
high- budget, semi-documentary
motion picture to be filmed by pro-
ducer-director Roger Corman in
Israel as a joint venture of Cor-
man's company and Noah Films
headed by Menahem Golan. The
latter is produce of "Sallah" and
director of the more recent thriller,
"Trunk to Cairo," soon to be .re-
leased throughout the United
States.
Corman has pledged to the state
of Israel 25 per cent of the profits
from "David and Goliath," which
tells the story of the six-day vic-
torious war of Israel against the
overwhelming might of six Arab
countries.
Corman, whose brother Gene
produced the strongly phrased
anti-Nazi epic "Tobruk," starring
Rock Hudson and George Peppard,
started Golan out in the film busi-
ness a few years ago when he
selected him as his executive as-
sistant for his European-made,
car-racing feature starring Mark
Damon.
In the meantime, Corman has
departed for New York to meet
with 20th-Fox publicity heads on
the release of his "St. Valentine's
Day Massacre." He leaves for
Europe and Israel to cast and pre-
pare production of "David and
Goliath."

Louis Applebaum Composes
Antony and Cleopatra Score

STRATFORD, rtntario — Louis
Applebaum, prominent Canadian
composer, will create the music
for Michael Langham's production
of "Antony and Cleopatra,", it was
announced by Langham, artistic
director of the Stratford Festival.
Applebaum replaces Manos Had-
jidakis, previously announced, who
was forced to withdraw because of
illness.
Applebaum, who has been as-
sociated with the festival since its
1953 inception, has composed the
music for many notable produc-
tions here and created the fanfare
which is played before each per-
formance at the Festival Theater.
Born in Toronto, Applebaum
began composing at the age of 15.
He was music director of the Na-
tional Film Board and composed
and conducted music for several
films in Hollywood. He also is
music consultant to the Canadian
government for the National Arts
Center, is a member of the ad-
visory panel to the Canada Council
and is on the board of the Can-
adian Music Center among other
activities.
"Antony and Cleopatra," with
Christopher Plummer and Zoe
Caldwell in the title roles, opens
