TO 6-4005. 526 Belmont NEW YORK-Former Vice-Pre- sident Richard Nixon, speaking at an informal welcome luncheon ten- dered him by the Zionist Organiza- tion of America under the chair- manship of its president, Jacques Torczyner, said that Israel should not and cannot withdraw from the occupied territory until permanent peace be achievnd, adding that this territory must serve as a bargain- ing point in its negotiations with the Arabs. Introducing Nixon to a distin- guished group of some 100 Zionist leaders, Torczyner referred to Nixon's friendship for Israel since 1956 when Israel was threatened with sanctions following the Sinai Campaign. In his address, Nixon, who just returned from a visit to Israel, re- ported the following major obser-. vations in most countries he visited: 1) Unanimous respect and ad- miration for feat of Israeli army even among foes; 2) No credence was attached to the reports that the United States and the British gave manpower to Israel in the war against the Arabs; 3) De Gaulle's new line while motivated by his anti-American ' 2nd envisioned for France an in- dependent role. Nixon reported that a large meas- ure of support for the Israeli cause in African countries was be- cause of the Israeli technical as- sistance. Nixon explained the Soviet's policy in the Middle East and elsewhere as motivated by the creation of maximum confusion and minimum commitments. He did not believe that Soviet Russia will take a softer line in the Middle East, charging that had it not been for Soviet arms there would not have been a war in the Middle East. Backward Economy Awaits Israel's Jordanian Rule Philadelphia Group Bids JERUSALEM (ZINS)-That Is- Washington Intercede for raelis will not derive any economic benefits from the liberated western Jews in Arab Lands part of Jordan is demonstrated by PHILADELPHIA (JTA) - The Fellowship Commission, the na- tion's oldest private human right intergroup relations agency, ap- pealed to the United States govern- ment to take steps to end the re- ported "denial of rights, imprison- ment, mob violence and murder of citizens in various Middle East states solely on the basis of their race, religion, or national origin." The commision's action followed publication of news of the slaying of Jews in Arab countries follow- ing the outbreak of the Arab-Jewish war, their imprisonment, intern- ment or deportation, and continu- ing incitement against them in several countries. the following facts: the per capita income of residents in Western Jordan is only $150 a year as com- pared with a per-capita income of $1,200 a year in Israel. This means that wester:. Jordan's 800,000 resi- dents' collective purchasing power is proportionately equal to that of 120,000 Israelis. Account must also be taken of the fact that the resi- dents include 400,000 Palestinian refugees, of whom one-third are still living in camps. The local in- dustry is small and primitive. Ag- ricultural production, especially fruits and vegetables, are in ample supply, enough to feed the popula- tion. On the other hand, great pos- sibilities have been opened up in the area of tourism.
