STEVENSVILLE PROUDLY PRESENTS German Author Oskar Graf Dies; Was Ardent Foe of Nazism in WW II NEW YORK—Oskar Maria Graf, an anti-Nazi German writer who was incensed when the National Socialists failed to burn more than one of his books, died June 28 at age 72. Mr. Graf was best known for his books "Prisoners All," "The Sta- tionmaster," "The Wolf" and "The Life of My Mother." After World War I—during which he managed to get mustered out of the service as an "idiot"—Mr. Graf became known as a writer in his country, and the Nazis hoped to make him one of their spokes- man. But when the Nazis burned books in 1933, Mr. Graf fled to Vienna, where he issued a protest: "What have I done to earn this disgrace? The Third Reich has rejected al- most all representative German literature and driven the best Ger- man writers to exile and suppress- ed their works. It has tried to re- place Germanism with nationalism, it has persecuted, imprisoned, tor- tured, murdered or driven to sui- cide the friends of freedom. Now it claims me as representative of that spirit!" Pauline Lenhard, 77 Pauline Lenhard, a member of Cong. Beth Abraham and its sis- terhood and an active member of the United Hebrew Schools Wom- an's Auxiliary and the Hebrew Free Loan Association, died June 30 at age 77.
