Bar Mitzva Gifts
Go Toward `Mitzva'
-Helping Israel

Louis E. Levitan (left), De-
troit Israel Bond director, holds
a $1,000 Israel Bond purchased
by Mark Rubinstein, who was
Bar Mitzva earlier this month at
Ahavas Achim. Mark used the
money he received as Bar Blitz-
va gifts to buy Israel Bonds, to
aid Israel in its hour of need.
Mark, who is in the eighth
grade, is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Robert Rubinstein, 19490
Littlefield. "I hope and trust
this example set by Mark will
be emulated," said Phillip Stoll-
man, chairman of the Israel
Bond Emergency Campaign. "It
is proper and fitting that a
sacred occasion such as a Bar
Mitzva or Bas Mitzva should be
utilized to aid a sacred cause—
the prosperity and security of
Israel."

Plan Trip to Ceylon
as SS HOPE Project

The seventh voyage of the hos-
pital ship S.S. HOPE will be to
Ceylon. The voyage will begin next
March and will mark the first
return of the HOPE to Asia since
the maiden voyage to Indoesia and
South Vienam in 1960-1961.
The announcement here came
from Detroiters Dr. Herbert J.
Bloom, and Dr. Robert K. Nixon,
as they prepared to leave Metro-
politan Airport as part of the
advance survey team to Ceylon.
They will take part in two weeks
of meetings with Ceylon officials,
helping to plan HOPE's teaching
and training program for the up-
coming voyage.

LETTER BOX

`How Good It Is
Mine Are Alive'

Editor, The Jewish News:
I wish to call attention to letters
I received from my family in Israel
which tell the story of Israel much
better than 10 eloquent speakers
can do.
We all know the heartening re-
sponse of U.S. Jewry to the peril of
Israel. We also know that Israel
won the war, but not the long de-
sired peace. Instead of the stale,
outworn speeches of some of our
so-called leaders, they better ask
and read their haverim some of
the following.
I am translating some excerpts
from the last letter I received from
my niece, Estherke (Esther Viron),
written June 18. Igal (her hus-
band, 49), Amir (her son-in-law,
23, a captain of a tank brigade,
who looks like 16 years old and is
a bashful child in company. He
hardly spoke to me when I saw
him two years ago), and Yoav
(her son in the air force, also
about 23) were still in service, also
her nephew, my grand-nephew,
Zvike, 24, who is now building
the Gaza-Lud railroad:
"It is very hard to open our
newspapers without a trembling
in your heart and tears in your
eyes. Danny, Uzi, Yosi and Shmu-
lik and Yankele—Two of one
family and again two of one
family—and there I sit in the
kitchen alone after work and

a feeling of egoism whisperes
quietly in my ear. Oh! how good

it is that mine are alive! and a
little more patience and they

will return home. I wish they

would already return! When I
was last Saturday at Didi's (her

daughter) kibutz, I heard one of
the children say: "Mama, why
did my father have to be
killed?" You see, my dear uncle,
just as much as we are desiring
peace, the wars are chasing after
us. I hope that my grandchildren
will not know any war and they

by Phillip Stollman, chairman of
the Israel Bond emergency cam-

Stollman said:
"The response both in the Israel
Bond emergency campaign and the
Israel Emergency Fund is hearten-
in,g. However, we cannot slacken
our efforts because the crisis is
still on. The Israel Bond Emer-
gency Campaign is over the $3,000,-
000 mark in cash deposited in the
bank and available to Israel," said

Bay City Jewry responded
promptly and generously to the
appeal for the Israel Emergency
Fund.
Rabbi Joseff J. Kratzenstein of
the Bay City Jewish Community
Association reports that within
two hours, on the day the war
broke out, 300 Bay Cityans con-
tributed $100,000.
"Translated into corresponding
proportions," Rabbi Kratzenstein
said, "the American Jewish com-
munity as a whole should be able
to send this month $2,000,000,000
to Israel as a spontaneous and
temporary support in its successful
fight for existence. The overwhelm-
ing majority of Bay City Jewry

A lot of the time you won't
even notice the best things
about Gas air conditioning.

It's so quiet. You can drop off for a cool nap on the
hottest afternoons. And because Gas air conditioning
has reduced the moisture in the air and filtered out dust

and pollen, you wake relaxed and refreshed.
If you already have a central Gas warm air heating
system in your home, you're halfway there.
When you install Gas air conditioning, you're entitled
to our special, low air conditioning rate on all the Gas

you use for all purposes, all summer long. If you buy now,
you won't have to make your first payment till November.
You can take up to five years on the balance.
Call your air conditioning contractor or call us. We'd
like to show you why Gas makes the big difference, and
costs less, too. A couple of things you'll notice right away.
