JEWISH COMMITMENT: Millions and millions of dollars are now
pouring in daily from all parts of the country to the United Jewish
Appeal for its Israel Emergency Fund to help Israel meet its humani-
tarian needs . . . Before the outbreak of the present war against
Israel, the responsibility for these needs was shared by the Israel
government with the Jewish Agency and the Joint Distribution Com-
mittee .. . Now, that the government of Israel has mobilized people
and resources completely into protecting its existence, it can no
longer participate in supporting human needs in health, education and
welfare which are essential for the morale of the entire country . . .
Added to this are also the great economic losses in industries which
operate without the workers who have been called up by the mili-
tary; the loss of income from tourists; the loss of unharvested crops
—losses which were estimated to reach about $300,000,000 a few
days before the war broke out . . . Who, if not American Jewry—
the largest and the wealthiest Jewry in the world—can aid Israel
urgently and generously with maximum giving to the Israel Emerg-
ency Fund? . . . Deeply moved by the courage of the Israelis in
these days, the Jews of the world everywhere feel themselves com-
mitted to give to the people of Israel the utmost support.

MASSIVE EFFORT: The response of the Jews in this country
has been of such dimension that has hardly been known in American
Jewish history . . . American Jews, whether rich or middle-class—
or even the poor—have all opened their hearts and their pocketbooks
to come fully to the aid of Israel . . . During the first days since
the proclamation of the Israel Emergency Fund, there were donors
who gave more than $1,000,000 each, as well as workers who each
donated a full week of their salary . . . The appeal of the Israel
Emergency. Fund caught on like wildfire among all elements of
American Jewry and in every community . . . The Council of Jewish
Federations and Welfare Funds, which is the central advisory body
of the Jewish communities in the United States and Canada, lost no
time in calling upon every community to mount a massive effort to
turn all past and current commitments to the UJA into cash, and to
provide the imperative additional aid through extraordinary giving
to the Israel Emergency Fund . . All friends of Israel are asked
to invest in Israel Bonds . . . UJA and the Israel Bond Organization
have agreed to coordinate their actions, while all other Israeli philan-
thropic agencies have agreed to forego their own special appeals, and
instead throw the full weight of their manpower and support into '
the campaigns of the Jewish federations and welfare funds for the
Israel Emergency Fund . . Highest priorities go now to the Israel
Emergency Fund.

Publisher Tells of War Experiences

Adolph Rosenberg, editor and
publisher of the Southern Israelite,
Atlanta, who was re-elected presi-
dent of the American Jewish Press
Association in Israel two weeks
ago, was the only association dele-
gate who did not return when war
broke out.
He recently wrote of his experi-
ences:
"No Jew or non-Jewish American
is ever too old to fail to sense bit-
terly the feeling of needless war
terror of a civilian population he
sees scurrying through the dan
gerous street fire to reach home
and the security of family and
make-shift shelters.
"Breakfast in the all but de-
serted hotel where I had stayed
overnight (in Jerusalem) inter-
rupted by a strange sounding air
shelter warning. It sounded more
like a stuck horn. The manager
hustled us into the shelter and
then rounded up four wide-eyed
kids passing on the sidewalks on
the way to school. This was the
first shelter warning and lasted
only a few minutes. Just a test,
the manager said. Later, it was
learned the all-clear had been
sounded through error at first
instead of the banshee wailing
call.
"In a half hour I heard the radio
announcement 'We are now fight-
ing.'
"I saw at El Arish the rust-
blackened faces of Israeli warriors
who had fought this fight in the
Sinai Desert. When newsmen
talked to them, they wanted most
