3 eggs
2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons oil (vegetable)
Sift the flour, salt and baking powder
onto a pastry board, make a well in the
center in which put the eggs and oil;
beat the eggs and oil together and
blend into the flour and knead until
smooth. The dough must be soft but
firm enough to roll with your hands
(floured) into pencil thin rolls, 14 inch
thick. Cut roll of dough into 1/2-inch
pieces. Bake in a shallow well greased
pan in 375 degree oven until golden
brown 15 minutes, shaking pan occa-
sionally to brown mandlen evenly. When
these are cold and dry they may be
stored in a closed jar. These can be
used just before serving soup as an
accompaniment or with gravy.

and stew 20 minutes, add to farfel
after removing whole onion.
Variation: Farfel can be used after
boiling with gravy as a side dish; can
also be used with sugar and cinnamon
as a side dish.

Here are recipes for two soup
accompaniments that have been
favorites with our grandmothers in
Eastern Europe for centuries and
relished as well by the new crop
of younger Jewish mothers here—
Chicken Soup with mandlen (soup
nuts) and Chicken Soup with Far-
fel (egg barley). Both are soup
accompaniments relished by most.
