Refugee Issue Needs Clarification ' kickio Israel shows an Israeli army half-track carrying armed troops, Among the issues related to the war situation which will need clarification is that of the Arab refugees. Well-meaning commentators have been misled by the entire problem. There were only about 550.000 Arabs who fled Israel when the state was established. Their number has grown and some have quoted 1,300,000 and others as many as 1,500,000. More than 60 per cent of those in refugee camps are under 18 and therefore were born after the establishment of Israel. No one knows the exact number to which the refugee numbers have grown because, as the State Department has admitted to the editor of The Jewish News at briefing sessions, the refugee rolls are padded, that the ration cards of tens of thousands — perhaps many tens of thousands — of those who have died are being used in speculative fashion. The entire issue needs review, and peace, which must follow the present conflict, must include a sound solution that would enable the occupants of refugee camps to become productive people who will be provided with homes and work—and that means they'll have to go to work. But this group also represents a Fifth Column if any number of them were to be returned to Israel; they therefore must be —P.S. rehabilitated elsewhere, other than Israel. 40—Friday, June 9, 1967 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS
